Honda Research Institute, a subdivision of Honda Motor Corp., have created the world’s first Brain Machine Interface (BMI) that allows human thought to control a robot’s activity. Yes, it does sounds like something from a science fiction novel.
Here’s how it works: Researchers attach electroencephalography (EEG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) sensors to the users head in order to measure blood flow and electrical changes.
The sensors translate the ‘slight cerebral variations‘ (which in English means thoughts) into readable robot launguage for the robot to follow. So far, their BMI works 90% of the time. They’re, of course, hopeful in making the process work all the time and will look to implement the technology on other “human-friendly’ robotic products. If you’re wondering, the light brown Crocs the scientist is wearing, they make the robot walk better (just kidding).
APRIL FOOL!
