Volvo has been testing them publically since 2007 and has now officially announced its intentions to bring plug-in hybrids to the market by 2012.
According to Volvo CEO Stephen Odell, the vehicle will be using lithium-ion powered plug-ins to have an all-electric range of around 31 miles. They’ll also be able to be charged on a standard home wall socket. A full charge takes approximately five hours and is supplemented by the vehicle’s regenerative energy brake system.
This summer, the automaker is scheduled to launch three V70 wagon plug-ins to demonstrate the next addition to its DRIVe Towards Zero technology program. Demo cars will also be used to take suggestions from consumers and retailers ahead of their series production.
