BMW’s Experiments With Electronic Noise Cancellation For Diesels

When looking for better fuel efficiency, there’s a myriad of choices out there for consideration such as smaller engines, alternative fuels, hybrids and electrified motors. Instead, BMW has gone a different way because, according to them, how a car sounds determines whether or not that certain propulsion system for the vehicle is acceptable to the ears of the potential customer.

Thus, other manufacturers have been actively pursuing ways and methods of controlling noise. In particular, BMW has been studying engine blocks and engine bays. The careful application of ribs and tuning of structural shapes have allowed these structures to be made lighter without risk of excessive vibration.

Consequently, adding insulation materials closer to the engine also reduces the overall amount needed elsewhere as well as facilitating the use of other types of engines that might be considered much more noisier.

All of these factors go into making a more efficient vehicle that are appealing to customers, because if consumers don’t want to buy a vehicle due to the distaste of how it sounds, then all that efficiency is just simply left in ‘P’.
