McLaren F1 GTR Art Car Tipped To Fetch US$3 Million At Auction

The McLaren F1 was well coveted and renowned to be one of the fastest supercars ever made.

It was well ahead of its time and it took more than ten years before it was dethroned by the Bugatti Veyron in terms of power. But it’s still seen as a car that’s revered enough to remain a very rare and special collector’s item. We’ve only known the race-spec McLaren F1 GTR so far but now comes McLaren F1 GTR art car? Things sure are getting more…artistic.

Historically, BMW was first to initiate the BMW’s Art Car Project somewhere in the 70′s. BMW began commissioning renowned artists to use Bimmers as their canvas. The beauty is that these cars were then used in the 24 Heurs de Le Mans series including this year’s M3 GT2, painted by Jeff Koons.

Thankfully, the BMW-powered McLaren F1 still receives a gradation of factory support from BMW themselves and apparently, the McLaren F1 art car is considered to be a part of the BMW Art Car Project. Being chassis #5, courtesy of French gentleman racer Jean-Luc Maury-Laribiére in 1994, the Giger-esque paint job was done by French artist, César.

The pictures depicted above and below indicate the result of the effort and it’ll be heading to Artcurial Motors’ auction block, which will feature other makes from Lamborghini, Ferrari and Aston Martin to name a few.

The art car is expected to be priced between 2 and 2.5 million Euros during the auction, which will take place on the 9th of July during the Le Mans Classic race.

Hope you got some Francophone-ability when you watch this clip.
