BMW’s new 5 Series (dubbed the F10) has been awarded the Top Safety Pick award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) by achieving the highest rating possible for front, side, rear and rollover crash protection. The F10 has just become the first 5 Series from BMW’s stable to ever achieve the highest rating possible. In addition, the F10 was surprisingly able to achieve such results with the IIHS just having incorporated a new roll-over test to their string of impacts and collision tests.
IIHS mentioned that BMW has made considerable ground with regards to side impact protection with last year’s car only managing to achieve a marginal rating.
The test conducted by the IIHS attempts to replicate an impact from a considerably larger vehicle, such as an SUV or a pick-up truck due to the higher number of such vehicles on the road today.
