The launch of the NAZA NZ125R was officiated by YB Senator Dato’ Ir. Donald Lim Siang Chai, Deputy Minister of Finance. Present were Mr. Wee Hong, President of Malaysia Motorcycle & Scooter Dealers Association, Datuk Wira SM Faisal Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin, NAZA Group of Companies Joint Group Executive Chairman and Dato’ SM Zulkifli SM Amin, NAZA Group of Companies Group Chief Operating Officer joining over 1,000 crowd.

“Since the incorporation of NAZA Bikes in 2003, NAZA Bikes has successfully introduced 14 different models of motorcycles and was the first Malaysian manufacturer to local assembling big bikes within the 250cc to 650cc range at affordable prices in the local market. This is in tandem with the NAZA Group vision and NAZA’s own history, and is a major step forward in line with my late father’s aspiration,” said Datuk Wira SM Faisal.

Prior to this, NAZA Bikes was a small scale motorcycle manufacturer that emphasized on scooter and 250cc motorcycles. With the launching of the NZ125R, NAZA Bikes will be able to compete with the other underbone brands in Malaysia.

NAZA reiterated that they are committed to sourcing the best technological partners in order to develop reliable, affordable and efficient motorcycles and thus, the motorcycle produced by NAZA was a collaborative effort with partners from Korea, Taiwan and China.

Weighing in at 95kg (including a full 3.7L fuel tank), the NZ125R’s Euro2 emissions compliant air-cooled single-cylinder 4-stroke 125cc power-plant has a 9:1 compression ratio that produces 10hp (7.5kW) at 7,500rpm and 10.3Nm of torque at 5,000rpm, which gets transmitted to the rear wheel through the use of a standard 4-speed semi-automatic gearbox. NAZA Bikes go on to claim that their 125cc stead is capable of achieving 65km/L at a constant speed of 80kmh, enabling riders to save up to RM500 per annum on fuel consumption alone.

Besides the usual compliment of both a kick-starter and an electric starter, the most unique part of the NZ125R, or any other 125cc bikes, is the inclusion of a 12V electrical socket located below the left handle, you can’t miss  the round black plastic casing. This will help riders to charge their mobile phones whilst on the go or even hook up a GPS unit. Something that is usually found on larger touring bikes. However, there’s a warning label that states “Please always turn on the engine while charging”.

The uniquely designed front and rear 17″ rims are wrapped by a 70/90 tyre up front and an 80/90 tyre at the rear. Stopping the NZ125R from speed comes from the radial disc up front while the rear is outfitted with a drum brake. Both front and rear have compression springs.

Another NZ125R dressed in blue livery possessed a more sportier looking carbon fiber exhaust from Two Brothers Racing, hinting at the ability that you could change out the exhaust for a more sportier and throatier exhaust note that’s reminiscent of a larger sport/super bike. Of course, this one’s going to send the price skywards.

The manufacturing plant in Shah Alam was officiated in 2003 by the former Prime Minister, YAB Tun Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi where all NAZA motorcycles are produced within the walls of its 24,000 sq ft facility that also houses a research and development centre, besides the usual hustle and bustle of assembly-lines, pre-delivery inspection, after sales and distribution centre for nationwide deliveries.

Datuk Wira SM Faisal stated, “In designing the bike, we took into consideration of many factors to match the design with the customers’ need. Foremost on our mind was to develop a bike that would be able to help lower-income earners save on fuel consumption and maintenance. Value-added features such as the electrical power-point is a practical feature that is currently not offered by other competitors.

Our long-term objective of NAZA Bikes is to be a full-fledged motorcycle manufacturing company that can fully develop our own indigenous product. We want to become a respectable and internationally well-known player. The launch of the NAZA NZ125R model is the first effort of NAZA Bikes to be a serious contender in the underbone category, both locally and internationally.”

The design of the NZ125R was fully undertaken by the engineers of NAZA Bikes. This model took 18 months to complete and 35% of the motorcycle’s components were made in Malaysia.

NAZA Bikes claim that the NZ125R was test ridden as far as 20,000km in order to ensure its quality and competency in comparison with the other motorcycles within the same category. It was also ridden as much as 2,700km by an independent rider in the period of 2 weeks to prove its reliability, resistibility and quality.

The average market for the underbone category for the past three years is 400,000 units where 75% of the market share was dominated by both Honda and Yamaha. These two brands have been present in the market since the 1960′s and the design and technology of the bikes produced emphasized the current needs of the market. These two factors were the key success for the Japanese brands internationally.

In 2012, NAZA Bikes aimed to sell 30,000 motorcycles within the cub category, which is equivalent to 7.5% of the market share. As for the year 2013, NAZA Bikes has targeted to sell 100,000 units or 25% of the market share for the underbone category.

The NAZA NZ125R is available for sale at RM4,256 OTR and the bike will be available at selected dealer showrooms from this weekend.
