In conjunction with the World Earth Day celebrations, around 160 employees from UMW Holdings Bhd, UMW Toyota Sdn Bhd and Perodua took an initiative to plant 1,800 mangrove trees at the Kampung Sungai Pelek Forest, Sepang. The inaugural effort was also joined by the Selangor Forestry Department (JPNS), the Selangor Water Management Authority as well as the Sepang Municipal Council.

“I am happy to see the coming together of volunteers for the greater good. In the race towards progress, we must never forget our responsibility towards nature. Although this was a small step, but I believe that the restoration of our planet is like a journey – one that begins even in the smallest of steps,” said UMW Holdings Bhd President and Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Syed Hisham Syed Wazir.

Meanwhile, Perodua Managing Director Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said that the company will continue to carry activities pertaining to the company’s Corporate Responsibility 3Es pillars – Enabling Youth Through Education, Enabling The Community and the Environment.

So far, a total of 2,500 mangrove saplings have been planted by UMW volunteers with the assistance of the local community in Sungai Pelek since 2011.
