Pirelli has been a long time runner in the WRC scene, but latest has it that the Italian rubber company has been voluntarily ceding ground to its rivals.

After having secured the exclusive contract to provide tires to Formula One, Pirelli has announced that it is withdrawing from the World Rally Championship (WRC).

Pirelli had been the official tire supplier to the top-tier rally series for the past three years, and despite the F1 contract, was expected to continue its involvement in the WRC as well. However, reports now indicate that the deadline for submitting its tender to renew the WRC contract that expires this year has come and gone without Pirelli’s bid.

According to reports, Pirelli was uncomfortable with the volatility of the WRC’s regulations. The FIA – which governs both F1 and the WRC – offered Pirelli the opportunity to extend the current contract by another year, but Pirelli declined, choosing instead to focus its efforts on single-seaters while continuing its rally activities in national series and, possibly, in the rival Intercontinental Rally Challenge.

The Italian Grand Prix at Monza marks the last European race of the 2010 FIA Formula One™ World Championship. As the Lotus Racing team heads to Jarno Trulli’s home country, Jarno and a number of key team members take the time to look ahead to what promises to be another exciting race for the Anglo-Malaysian squad.

Mike Gascoyne, Lotus Racing Chief Technical Officer: “Looking back to last weekend, Spa was in many ways one of our best performance of the year so far. We have had better positions at the end of a number of races, but in terms of reliability, Spa was our strongest performance to date. Now we go to Monza and that’s always a special place to race – the Tifosi create an incredible atmosphere, and while it’s obviously focused on Ferrari, I think seeing Jarno and Heikki in our green and yellow cars will be pretty special for some of the most passionate motorsport fans in the world.

“Monza will also be very special for me, Tony, Din, Nasa, Riad and the whole team on a personal level. Race day is the 12th September, which is exactly one year to the day since we heard that our entry into the 2010 Formula One™ World Championship had been accepted. It’s hard to put into words just what that means to all of us, but it’s already been an incredible 365 days, and we have many more exciting times to come. I’ve been asked a number of times if I really thought we’d be able to do what looked to many like an impossible task – creating a team from literally just words on a piece of paper to now sitting 10th in the Championship, best of the new teams and with a very bright future ahead of us.

“Onto the track itself: Monza is unique as it’s now the lowest downforce circuit on the modern Formula One™ calendar. For the race weekend, we’ll have a revised low downforce package with new front and rear wings, plus a few other smaller modifications to the cars.”

Heikki Kovalainen: “After Spa I’m feeling really good physically and mentally. Before we got to Belgium, I had a proper rest for a week, and then got back into training for the second couple of weeks of the summer break to prepare myself for the end of the season. It paid off because I felt great all weekend in Spa and now I’m looking forward to Monza and then the remaining races. Monza is one of the real highlights of the year and it’ll be good to be back in Italy. It’s a very different type of circuit and it has a great atmosphere. Obviously Ferrari have huge support out in the stands, but so do the other teams as the fans just love F1™. I think it’ll be a pretty cool weekend – for us drivers it’s a high speed track and with the low downforce configuration it makes it very interesting to race there. For the fans it’s cool as well as the cars are pushed to the limit, and they look and sound pretty awesome on track.”

Jarno Trulli: “Monza is a very special Grand Prix. We Italian drivers have fantastic support out there, and the fans are really fired up for the race. It’s such a warm atmosphere, you can’t help but enjoy it. The track is challenging, but it’s not as technical as some of them. You obviously need good top speed, low downforce, good traction good braking stability. Everyone talks about the low downforce, but the brakes play a really crucial role. You need to have the confidence to brake as late as possible and as hard as possible at the chicanes, and then you need to have really good traction to get yourself out of them as quickly as possible. I think we saw in Spa that our car is pretty good at the quicker tracks, so I think we’ll be able to repeat our performance in Belgium – as long as we come out ahead of our nearest rivals we’ll be happy, and then we’ll be back in the air for the remaining races of 2010.”

Tony Fernandes, Team Principal: “I’ve had to watch the last few races on TV as other commitments have kept me away from the races, so it’ll be good to be back on track in Italy. The last couple of weeks have been very exciting for the whole team – we’ve seen Nabil Jeffri, a Malaysian superstar in the making, become the youngest ever driver to test an F1™ car at the aero test we ran on Wednesday, and it was a very proud moment for me to see him put in a great day’s work for us in what must have been a pretty stressful environment for such a young guy. He proves what I’ve always believed – work hard to achieve your dreams and they will come true. That’s the same for everyone in Lotus Racing – exactly one year ago on September 12th our Formula One™ dream came true, and now we’ll be competing at one of the world’s great race tracks, bringing the green and yellow cars back to where they belong, and I can’t wait to see the reaction of the crowds when we take to the track. Mike has already said what it means to him to see our cars racing hard just 12 months since we started work on this amazing team, and I echo his thoughts entirely. It has been an amzing journey already, but after Monza we’ll be heading back to Asia, and it’s going to keep getting more exciting with every step we take.”

Formula BMW Pacific contenders battle it out at Hong Kong Autosport Challenge

The PETRONAS MOFAZ Racing Team will make its first international debut during the race weekend of 2 to 5 September 2010 as the Formula BMW Pacific Series enters into its autumn season at the Guangdong International Circuit. The event will host Rounds 7 to 10 of the series and as a support event for the Hong Kong Autosport Challenge.

Calvin Wong, racing in his second year in the Formula BMW Pacific, will be looking forward to improve his current 4th position in the drivers’ championship standing as the series enters the autumn season. Aiming to improve their overall standings, teammates Natasha Seatter, Abang Amirrul Hadi Khiruddin and Ryan Ritchie also have their targets set on their quest for the Rookie Championship titles, having undergone intensive training and preparation outside of their respective race machines throughout the summer. The team will also be hoping to make headway to improve their stand in the overall team championship, with the target being consistent performances for the weekend at Guangzhao.

With hot weather and occasional thunderstorms forecasted for the race weekend, the team will be putting all the data and knowledge acquired from the first 6 rounds of the series to ensure that both drivers and their race vehicles will give their best performances.

Team Principal, Haji Fauzy: “As the Guangdong International Circuit would be a new track for everyone, it should be interesting to observe how everyone adapts and fares.  Over the summer break, the drivers have had an intensive and full workout schedule to keep them in great physical and mental shape, and the cars have been thoroughly and well-prepared, ready for the challenge ahead. Our target at Guangdong is to fly the Malaysian flag at the podium, in commemoration and conjunction with our nation’s 53rd Merdeka Day. We certainly look forward to more positive results this weekend!”

After Guangzhao, the team will take on the challenge of the next round of the Formula BMW series as a support event to the Formula One Singapore Grand Prix on 23 to 26 September 2010. The final two rounds will take place at the Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS) at Japan’s Okayama International Circuit on 29 to 31 October 2010, with the historic Macau Grand Prix hosting the season finale on 19 to 21 November 2010.

Ducati and Valentino Rossi have signed a two year agreement for the nine-times World Champion to race with the “Rossa” of Borgo Panigale in the Ducati Marlboro Team from 2011.

The arrival of Valentino in Ducati opens a new and exciting chapter in the Italian factory’s sporting history and, indeed, of the whole MotoGP Championship. The opportunity of lining-up such an extraordinary rider and character is considered by Ducati to be a huge value to the whole Ducati MotoGP project.

Toyota might just be getting back into the motorsports scene with a Lexus LFA entrant into the FIA’s GT2 for next year in order to bring the fight to the surreal Nissan GT-R.

Why Toyota would enter the LFA into the GT1 category is rather perplexing, since the FIA has decided to eliminate this race under the 2011 Le Mans rules due to the dwindling interests for this annual race category, which saw only six manufacturers fielding 4 cars each for a total of 24 cars which lined-up on the grid for this year’s 24 Heur du Mans (24 Hours of Le Mans).

The 6 marques that entered were as follows:

- Aston Martin (DBRS9)
- Corvette (Z06)
- Ford (GT)
- Lamborghini (Murcielago R-SV)
- Maserati (MC12)
- Nissan (GT-R)

Therefore, it makes better sense for Toyota to actually make an entry into the 24 Heur du Mans and receive their ‘baptism under fire’ by taking on the likes of Ferrari, Aston Martin and Porsche.

After having developed the LFA to this stage and having run in two 24 hour races at the Nürburgring, the LFA would already be relatively close to GT2 specs, which would greatly help in it getting prepped for the 2011 LMS race series.

Lotus Racing has confirmed its commitment to embracing young talent with the announcement that Nabil Jeffri, the 16 year old Malaysian karting prodigy currently competing in Formula BMW Pacific with Eurasia Motorsport, will be driving for the fastest new F1™ team at an aero test the team will be running in early September at an undisclosed location in the UK.

Nabil has enjoyed a bright start to his motor racing career and is currently fifth in the Formula BMW Pacific championship – taking part in the aero test with Lotus Racing will give the young star invaluable experience of working at the top level in global motorsport, and will give the team a chance to put a promising young driver through his paces very early in his career away from the glare of a Grand Prix weekend.

A talented young driver, Nabil is driving for Lotus Racing as part of his sponsorship in the AirAsia ASEAN Driver Development Program. The program was created to accelerate the growth of motorsports in the region. It provides an avenue for youth in the ASEAN region to pursue their dream of becoming professional race car drivers. It offers aspiring drivers a platform to polish their talents and effectively compete with world class drivers.

MOFAZ brings brute-force with precision skills to the 10th Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race this Sunday, 8th August 2010.

MOFAZ has been heavily involved in motorsports for the last twenty years, it also managed to acquire the Fortec racing outfit that resides in the UK, which helped produce the likes of Juan Pablo Montoya, Heikki Kovalainen, Jarno Trulli as well as Fairuz Fauzy, allowing for the emergence of MOFAZ Racing and making it the first Asian company to own a comeptitve racing team in the World Series Championship.

Taking a look at their driver line-up MOFAZ has three strong drivers that will contend for the Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race (MMER) championship this Sunday.

The race will begin at the stroke of midnight on Sunday and end at mid-day (12pm) Sunday afternoon. For the twelve hours of grueling test of endurance, the helm of the Aston Martin will be passed through the hands of Fairuz Fauzy, Farriz Fauzy and Rizal Ramli. These three drivers bring extensive knowledge and above all else, experience, to the forefront of Malaysia’s endurance racing.

Fairuz has had extensive experience in racing having been in Formula Renault, F3, Formula Ford, GP2, GP2 Asia, Spyker F1 Test Driver, A1 GP Malaysia Driver Renault’s F3.5 (2009) and now Lotus Racing’s 3rd Driver in Formula 1. “Personally, I’ve always wanted to take part in the Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race, but over the past ten years, my racing schedule has always clashed with the MME dates. This year, the time gap between the Haungarian GP and Belgian GP has allowed me to fulfill this desire!” when queried about his participation in the MME this year. With regards to strategy, Fairuz maintains that “The focus for our team is to gain crucial data from testing to ensure the reliability and consistency of our car throughout the race. Our Key concern also lies in management of the tyres, as we need to make sure that the tyres last as long as possible to optimise the number of pit stops.”

Farriz Fauzy

His brother, Farriz Fauzy, has contended successfully in F3 and more importantly, in the MMER for the last six years and says “On top of gaining crucial data for our race management strategy, we also have to rely on solid teamwork. I’m grateful to be able to race not only with my brother, but also our good friend, Rizal. The three of us have had good racing experiences together in a team before during our Formula 3 years, and we know that we can gel well as a team again. Solid teamwork is salient in us achieving reliability to endure the challenge ahead.”

Team MOFAZ Racing completes their driver line-up with Rizal Ramli, who has been an MMER participant very regularly as well as in the Porsche Infeneon Carrera Cup Asia series and is quips that the MMER is one of his favourite race events. :To be racing again with my former Formula 3 team-mates Fairuz and Farriz in Sepang’s MMER is indeed great. This is the opportunity for us to blaze the circuit, whilst strategising for steady driving to last the twelve hours. This year’s MME will begin at midnight, so we have roughly eight hours of cool and temperate weather conditions before the morning sun brightens, which we intend to tap into our advantage.” And perhaps so will everyone else.

Team MOFAZ Racing’s Aston Martin stead is a GT4 Vantage with a 4.7L V8 engine that has been tuned to guzzle RON 97 fuel from a 100 litre FIA-approved ATL bag-type fuel tank that has twin-fuel pumps to help feed the hungry V8.

The engine is connected to a standard 6-speed manual transmission or Sportshift (ASM) transmission thats been fitted with a breather catch tank. It also has a twin-plate Valeo 125mm cera-metallic clutch for added reliability and a lightweight flywheel to allow the engine to access it’s power band more quickly.

Besides it being obviously stripped out for this event, its side and rear windows have been replaced with polycarbonate to further reduce its heft that sits on 2.5″ ID Eibach springs and Bilstein adjustable aluminium absorbers thats connected to 18″ magnesium OZ Racing rims covered in Perli racing slicks. Finally, stopping power comes from Aston Martin’s standard four-piston monoblock calipers and uses Pagid RS 29 racing pads.

In race trim, this race car’s kerb weight puts it at 1,350kg (excluding fuel) which is almost equivalent to a fully fueled Proton Waja, but thankfully, it’s V8 engine would do more than sufficiently propel this thoroughbred with eloquent ease around Sepang.

A special event was held by Team TeleVAS Racing (TTR) with the sole purpose of raising funds for Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-kanak Cacat Taman Megah (PPKKCTM) and a slew of Corporate Companies, Go-Kart enthusiasts and local celebrities attended the fun-filled morning.

The clouds were hovering thickly above as Team WeMotorers rendezvoused at City Karting Go-Kart Track in Shah Alam. Izwan, Hasrul, Alex Tan and yours truely attended the 1-hour Endurance race in order to lend a helping hand in raising funds for the Handicapped and Disabled Children of Taman Megah PJ.

Taman Megah’s Handicapped and Disabled Children’s Home or Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Taman Megah (PPKKCTM) is a home that takes care of disabled and underprivileged children. PPKKCTM houses over 100 children and some adults with various disabilities. There are also normal children who come from broken, abused or single parent backgrounds. Due to the growing number of children coming in, the Home is now expanding.

Outback Steakhouse was present to provide the food for our hungry mouths, as well as Rossington Water, KLIA Premier Holdings, UNOS, Sisma Auto, Dell Cyberjaya, WeMotor.com and ofcourse TeleVAS Holdings.

As the registrations closed, a safety briefing session followed, which also outlined the format and rules of the event:

- 15 minute practice round and qualifying session.

- 1 hour Endurance race.

- Each of the four (4) karters must race within the stipulated 1-hour session.

- No driver changes can be made within the last 15mis of the race.

Each team comprised of four drivers and there were more than twenty teams, who generously donated RM1,500 to PPKKCTM, and each team was provided an 80cc kart to see who would come out top-dog.

Team WeMotorer’s Alex Tan went up against tough competition to end the 15min qualifying session in 12th with a best lap time of 1min 22.35s. However, after Alex was able to acclimatize to our ramdomly picked kart #3, Team WeMotorers was able to post a best time of 1min 20.19s in the 9th lap and had moved up the order into 10th place.

However, at the end of the 1 hour karting session, we had finished 1 place down from where we started, in 13th position. Considering it was all out of fun, we had a blast just having a little taste of what an open-wheeled endurance race felt like (the driver changes, on-track battles, the sweet smell of exhaust fumes) and letting loose the “Schumi” inside all of us in Team WeMotorers left us jubilating for the rest of the day.

More importantly, to add to the jubilations, it was certainly priceless to watch the children of PPKKCTM enjoy a wonderful ride around City Karting’s go-kart track in a 2-seater kart at speed and emerging with a great big smile on their faces. It’s one thing to bring happiness to the people you know around you, but to bring happiness to underprivileged children is simply priceless!

At the end of the day, no one left as winners or loosers, everyone obtained a prize and a certificate as remembrance for our contributions to a noble cause and a little spice, the deliciously looking Daphne Iking helped to present the medals and trophies for this momentous occasion.

Ferrari has just released new photos of the 458 Challenge during its test session at the Vallelunga race circuit.

Factory test drivers Maurizio Mediani and Jaime Melo were on hand to provide feedback on the 458 Challenge, and predictably, both seem impressed with the car’s capabilities.

Mediani described his drive as “very quick and extremely good fun,” while his counterpart commented, “I am sure that Prancing Horse competition owners will be very pleased with the car.”

Using the standard roadgoing 458 Italia as a base, Ferrari created the Challenge version by increasing output of the 4.5L V8 to 570bhp, cutting weight via thinner and lighter body panels, adding a race-specific suspension setup, fitting 19″ BBS wheels with Pirelli racing slicks, installing a set of carbon ceramic Brembo brakes and more.

So equipped, Ferrari claims the 458 Challenge can lap Fiorano over two seconds per lap quicker than its predecessor, the F430 Challenge, while achieving a maximum of 1.6g’s worth of lateral acceleration.

BMW will contest all three legs of the 2010 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup 2010 with the BMW M3 GT2. This Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO)-sanctioned championship consists of Silverstone’s 1000-kilometre race in Great Britain, the classic “Petit Le Mans” round in Road Atlanta (US), and the 1000-kilometre season finale in Zhuhai (CN).

In Silverstone and Zhuhai management of the BMW M3 GT2, to be driven by BMW works drivers Jörg Müller (DE) and Dirk Werner (DE), will be in the hands of Schnitzer Motorsport, led by team manager, Charly Lamm (DE). With the 10-hour “Petit Le Mans” counting towards the American Le Mans Series, BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team, together with drivers Dirk Müller (DE)/Joey Hand (US) and Tommy Milner (US)/Bill Auberlen (US), will represent BMW in the event. The ALMS drivers will be supported by Andy Priaulx (GB) and Dirk Werner.

“The Intercontinental Le Mans Cup is offering a new approach to set up a worldwide GT category,” says BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen. “I am convinced the concept will find favour among spectators in 2010 and beyond. In Silverstone and Zhuhai our flag will be flown by BMW Team Schnitzer, while BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team will represent us in Road Atlanta as part of the ALMS campaign. I am looking forward to three exciting races.”

BMW currently is second in the GT category of the American Le Mans Series, while drivers Auberlen/Milner and Dirk Müller/Hand occupy second and third respectively in the drivers’ classification. In the European Le Mans Series, BMW Team Schnitzer has to date contested races in Le Castellet (FR) and Spa-Francorchamps (BE), with the best result being fourth in Belgium thanks to the no. 79 BMW M3 GT2. This year’s Le Mans 24 Hour race in France saw Jörg Müller, Augusto Farfus (BR) and Uwe Alzen (DE) placed sixth in the LM GT2 category.

For BMW the highlight of the season to date was the Nürburgring 24-hour race: Jörg Müller, Augusto Farfus, Uwe Alzen and Pedro Lamy (PT) celebrated victory, scoring BMW’s 19th overall win in the 38th running of this endurance classic.
