Renault’s New Beginning

Renault R30Renault F1 has confirmed Russian driver Vitaly Petrov will partner Robert Kubica for thr 2010 season. The news came as the team revealed their 2010 car at Spain’s Valencia circuit, where pre-season testing begins on Monday. Petrov, will become the first Russian to compete in Formula One racing when he takes to the grid in Bahrain next month. China’s Ho-Pin Tung was confirmed as Renault’s third driver, with Belgian Jerome d’Ambrosio and Czech driver Jan Charouz as reserves.

Kubica and Petrov revealed the R30 to the assembled media, complete with its new black and yellow livery – the iconic colours made famous by Renault in the 1980s. With stable aero regulations the R30 is a mixture of evolution and revolution, and is much more svelte than its predecessor. In particular the rear of the car has been considerably reworked to allow the car to make the most of the double-decker diffusers that were first seen last year. Changes have also been made to the architecture of the chassis to adapt to the refuelling ban, which has required the installation of a much larger fuel tank.

The R30 will get its first run at Valencia on Monday and Renault will remain at the circuit until Wednesday evening to complete the first pre-season test session.

In case you hadn’t figured it out, GTDi signifies a gasoline turbocharged direct-injection engine.

The engine, which is set to replace a 2.5L five-cylinder model in various European Volvos, produces 203 hp and about 221 lb-ft of torque at 1750 rpm. Volvo estimates it would achieve about 28 mpg.

Volvo says, the engine will be offered in Europe with a six-speed automatic or manual transmission. Powering S80s, V70s, and XC60s, the engine will initially be launched in South East Asia, the Netherlands, China, and Japan.

SIC, Petronas Kick Off F1 Promotion In KLCC

As the world anxiously waits in excitement for the Formula 1 Championship season, promoters of 2010 Formula 1 PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix kicked of their promotion campaign in Kuala Lumpur amidst strong confidence of a large turnout event on 2 to 4 April in Sepang.

In a joint promotion at the PETRONAS Philharmonic Hall Foyer within the capital’s leading shopping complex Suria KLCC, event organizer and promoter Sepang International Circuit (SIC) and title sponsor PETRONAS also launched the ‘I Love F1′ campaign to generate greater interest and increasing the awareness among Malaysians for the sports and in support of the 1Malaysia campaign in promoting multi racial harmony and understanding among the people through F1.

“This should be the most exciting season in years in Formula 1 especially from the Malaysian perspective ans it is our wish to see everyone in the  ‘ I Love F1′  t-shirt filling the circuit on race day,” says Razlan Razali who is SIC Chief Executive Officer and event director for the 2010 Formula 1 PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix.

With PETRONAS also being title sponsor of the new Mercedes GP-PETRONAS F1 Team, which effectively is the defending champion Brawn GP, will be the team the world will watch as it sensationally brings back seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher to the racing grid.

With Schumacher’s slick driving skills and the engineering brilliance of Ross Brawn, its supporters are brimming with confidence that the Mercedes GP-PETRONAS will be among the top contenders for the world championship this season.

All the competing teams would go into testing in February as they start preparation for 19-round championship, which will open in Sakhir at the Bahrain Grand Prix from March 12-14. Malaysia will host Round 3 of the world championship at Sepang Circuit from April 2 to 4.

The 2010 race in Sepang will mark the 12th edition of the Formula 1 PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix, which can be traced back to October 1999 which saw Schumacher making a comeback in Sepang after a long lay-off following an accident at the British Grand Prix earlier in July where he broke his right leg.

Also known as the 1Malaysia Racing Team, the Lotus F1 Racing Team is bringing back the highly successful brand back into the F1 world with the backing of top Malaysian corporate companies that included Proton as the owner of Lotus Group, Naza Group and Air Asia.

Most prominent would be the no refueling rule, which will demand bigger fuel tanks and deeper intelligence in preserving fuel. Pitstops, however, remained necessary as teams would be required to use both sets of tires of different compounds.

The 2010 Formula 1 PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix itself would have a change with the 12th editon starting at 4pm instead of 5pm as it had last year. Prior to 2009, the Malaysian race had traditionally started at 3pm; but had been delayed to boost TV viewing in the European sector.

“As to what we organized last year, we will be bringing again the drivers’ autograph session at the track.  We will also have entertainment and activities at the Mall Area throughout the event and a big after-race concert….It will be big this year” said Razlan.

With all these supporting elements, Razlan has expressed confidence that the 2010 Formula 1 PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix would draw a capacity crowd and even breaking the 2008 Race Day attendance over 120,000 trackside spectators

“Our tickets are priced as low as RM100 and as we did in previous years, we are offering discounts for students and special packages for groups,” said Razlan, adding that purchases of selected tickets between now and January31 would entitle the buyer a 50 percent discount on a second ticket.

Chevy Camaro Convertible Contract Goes To Magna, 20,000 Units Per Year Expected

General Motors has awarded the contract for the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible to Magna International Inc. and they will order 20,000 units per year.

There were less than 50,000 convertibles sold during the year compared to over 200,000 sales figure of four years ago. The 20,000 Camaro convertibles are planned to be produced by Magma Car Top Systems at their Bowling Green Kentucky with materials from Mexico. It’s hard to predict whether the Camaro will have enough momentum the next year to make 20,000 convertibles a possibillity, but we’re guessing a droptop version of the Bowtie pony car may well be the right recipe for keeping the Camaro lineup fresh.

Can Spyker Weather This Storm?

As we reported before, it may seem like Spyker was one of the unlikely buyers of Saab but the thing for sure is that it is set to struggle with the real challenge which is to convert two loss-making companies into a profitable one.

Spyker Chief Executive Victor Muller also bought out his largest shareholder, Russian bank tycoon Victor Antonov, as part of the deal but the new Saab Spyker Automobiles NV faces huge challenges. The persistent losses, outdated designs, high labour costs, declining sales and, perhaps above all, little belief in the industry that it can pull off a turnaround.

“It seems like a gamble. They’ve got the new 9-5, the 9-4X coming out next and the new 9-3 should be coming out in 2012, which could be quite lucrative, but whether they can attract customers back to the brand and make it profitable again is the billion-dollar question,” IHS Global’s Ian Fletcher said.

Spyker, which only makes several dozen handmade supercars every year, is hoping to benefit from Saab’s technical resources and its distribution network, while CEO Muller has said he hopes the sports car maker will inject entrepreneurial spirit into the Saab brand. Saab, which has lost money over the past decade, was put up for sale more than a year ago. GM has suspended its plans to wind down Saab operations, pending a February closing.

At Spyker headquarters in the Dutch city of Zeewolde, there were high spirits at work on Wednesday. Hans van Rennes, Spyker’s vice president of marketing, said a Saab dealer sent the company a cake and one-time Saab suitor Koenigsegg called to offer its congratulations. Outside the offices, a Dutch television show organised a parade of old and new Saab cars. But happiness at Saab’s rescue aside, Spyker’s financing remains a question. As recently as July, the company did not have the money lined up for its 2010 production.

The new deal includes a 400 million euro loan to Saab from the European Investment Bank (EIB), with a Swedish government guarantee. European Union regulators said on Wednesday they would review the guarantee plans as early as possible.

2010 Mazda6 Facelift Revealed

Mazda will officially reveal its facelifted version of the 2010 Mazda 6 at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.

The new Mazda family face is introduced, along with new head and rear lamps, for more sportiness and a clearer premium identity. There are changes at the back too, where the car now sports a completely remodeled bumper, light clusters, and tailpipes. For the interior, it has a single colour interior instead of the contrasting tones in the 2009 model.

Six engines will be available, including a powerful new 2.0-litre DISI petrol that uses less fuel and produces lesser emissions than the 2.0-litre engine it replaces. Its five-speed automatic transmission was adapted especially for this new petrol engine to deliver an optimal combination of acceleration and fuel economy. Mazda’s MZR 1.8- and 2.5-liter petrol engines have also seen some tweaking.  The MZR-CD 2.2-liter turbo diesel, on offer ranging from 127 to 178 horsepower, has modifications to make it more efficient and clean.

For more details we have to wait until March for the Geneva Motor Show.

Done Deal: Spyker Buys Saab From GM

General Motors has officially announced it has reached a deal with the Dutch supercar builder Spyker over the sale of its Saab brand. Reports suggest that the arrangement takes the form of a RM 252 million cash deal with another RM 1.9 billion coming from a European Investment Bank loan that has been guaranteed by the Swedish government.  GM will also hold RM 1.1 billion worth of preference shares in the new company, an amount that totals less than a 1%  voting right in Saab capital.

“Today’s announcement is great news for Saab employees, dealers, and suppliers, great news for millions of Saab customers and fans worldwide, and great news for GM,” said John Smith, GM vice president for corporate planning and alliances.

“General Motors, Spyker Cars, and the Swedish government worked very hard and creatively for a deal that would secure a sustainable future for this unique and iconic brand, and we’re all happy for the positive outcome,” Smith said.

Mercedes GP Petronas Shows off New Livery

The new Mercedes GP Petronas team has revealed the modernized Silver Arrows racecar livery with its drivers Nico Rosberg and seven-time Formula 1 champ Michael Schumacher alongside.

Don’t get too excited just yet, though. The iridescent silver with green and exposed black carbon fiber is only a mockup of last year’s championship Brawn GP car. The official 2010 racecar called the MGP W01 will debut at the F1 test session in Valencia, Spain next month.

Here are some of the remarks by the stars of the team…

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER: “Finally the 2010 Formula 1 season is firing up! I have to say that I am totally committed to this new challenge. This season feels like a re-start for me and I am so motivated. We have a very exciting combination … a World Champion team in every sense of the word and I cannot wait to get into the car for the first time in Valencia. I am convinced that the team will be in a very good position to fight for the championships this season and I will definitely give it a go. Driving for Mercedes-Benz again is like the closing of a circle for me as I started my racing driver career with the three-pointed star on my helmet. This is another reason why I cannot wait for the competition to get underway.”

NICO ROSBERG: “You can really feel the successful motorsport history of Mercedes-Benz here at the Museum in Stuttgart and to be part of the new Silver Arrows team and that racing heritage makes me feel extremely proud and motivated. Since joining the team in November, I have spent a lot of time at the factory in Brackley, at Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines in Brixworth and here in Stuttgart, which has given me the opportunity to settle in and get to know everyone. I have seen how hard the team is working on the new car and I really can’t wait for the opportunity to drive it for the first time in Valencia next week. I am looking forward to working with everyone and will give it my all to reward their fantastic efforts with good on-track results this season.”

ROSS BRAWN, TEAM PRINCIPAL: “It is a privilege to be here at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart today for the official presentation of the team. With your first look around the Museum, you realise the fantastic racing heritage of Mercedes-Benz and we hope to be able to contribute to those successes going forward. Our team has been working extremely hard throughout last year and over the winter on the development of the MGP W01 and everyone at the team is looking forward to the start of testing in Valencia next week. We have two excellent drivers in Nico and Michael, who will form one of the most exciting and one of the best partnerships on the grid.”
