For the first time, Volkswagen is introducing a multipurpose vehicle in Malaysia – the seven-seater Cross Touran that introduces unconventional performance of the Volkswagen brand.
The Cross Touran, which is a cross between the personality of an SUV and a character of an MPV, first made its debut in the country at the Volkswagen Das Auto Show 2011 showcase in September. The vehicle is part of the Das Auto or The Car philosophy of the brand.
Volkswagen Group Malaysia managing director Mr Ricky Tay said the vehicle sits at the forefront of the company’s showcase of Das Auto, or The Peoples’ Car philosophy.
“We want to offer Malaysians the complete Volkswagen experience. The Cross Touran will be the lifestyle option that we provide. This is a class-leading compact MPV and is sure to excite those who appreciate premium at affordable prices,” he added.
Engine and performance
The Cross Touran will have leading performance figures in its class via its 1.4 TSI twin-charged engine that generates 140PS. This outstanding engine is mated to Volkswagen’s innovative 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG).
This enables the Cross Touran to churn out 220Nm from as low as 1,250rpm, reaching 100kph in 9.8 seconds, which is excellent for a compact MPV. The Cross Touran boasts a top speed of 194kph.
The Cross Touran’s TSI engine consumes some 7.1 litres/100km of fuel on a combined cycle but emit 164g/km.
This more ‘extrovert’ compact MPV follows the new Volkswagen design DNA and impresses externally with a dynamic character line, a new, powerful rear-end design and two-part taillight clusters.
However, the Cross Touran traditionally ‘goes one better’ and with its ”Cross” kit complete with longer suspension springs it gets 20 millimetres more ground clearance than the standard model.
Thanks to its striking exterior elements the new Cross Touran is also instantly perceived as an autonomous model. The widened wheel arches form a unit with the side sills, which are drawn right up into the doors. It is also given a sporty character by the differentiated front and rear bumpers and the black grained protective strips on the doors.
The 17-inch ‘Funplay’ alloy wheels are complemented by bi-xenon headlights with daytime running lights, headlights washer, rain sensor and remote unlocking for the luggage compartment.
Through the sum of its special features the Cross Touran glistens with Wolfsburg virtues: interior comfort and convenience (40 storage bins and optional third seating row), driving fun and environmental awareness.
This 7-seater vehicle comes standard with Volkswagen’s Climatronic air-conditioning system, leather-wrapped gearshift knob and multi-function steering wheel, interior chrome trim, RCD310 audio system complete with MP3 player, MEDIA-IN with USB adapter cable, cruise control and of course, park distance control (PDC).
These features alone, coupled with the vehicle’s superior all-round capability, are more than enough to excite Malaysian families.
The 1,989 litres of cargo space is another point that would set the Cross Touran apart from the rest.
What better way to transports the loved ones than to have one of the safest compact MPVs in the market. The Cross Touran boasts the maximum Euro-NCAP rating of 5 stars.
Volkswagen went even further by equipping the vehicles with ABS and EBD, Anti-Slip Regulator (ASR), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Engine Drag Torque Control (EDTC), Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and 6 airbags.
Additionally, there are 3-point seat belts in the second row seats with height adjustment.
The Cross Touran is available is 11 colours; Candy White, Wild Cherry Red, Toffee Brown, Reflex Silver, Silver Leaf, Titanium Beige, Acapulco Blue, Pepper Grey and Night Blue, Deep Black and Venetian Green.
A choice of two interior colours is available for the ‘Fey’ fabric seats; Natural Brown and Anthracite.
