Sime Darby Auto Italia Sdn Bhd today, 11 May 2012, launched the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta at their AutoConneXion showroom in Jalan Ipoh.
In a relatively modest event, Sime Darby Auto Italia Sdn Bhd Managing Director Mohd Hazeem Abd Rahman unveiled the 5-door hatchback that has a price tag of RM178,888.
The new Alfa Romeo Giulietta is powered by a 1.4 litre Turbo Multiair 16 Valve petrol engine with 170 hp and maximum torque figure of 250 Nm. The Multiair system continuously adjusts the degrees and intake valve opening times, making the engine virtually throttle-less.
Coupled with a 6-speed Twin Clutch Transmission, it propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.7 seconds with a top speed of 218 km/h. Even with such performance figures, the combined cycle fuel consumption is a low 5.2 litres /100 km.
Visually, the front displays the classic shield embedded in the front bumper and suspended between the air vents. This design combines an energetic personality with a distinctly elegant form. The headlights feature daytime running lights with LED technology.
The profile of the new Giulietta looks like a 2-door coupé thanks to the concealed rear door handles giving the impression of an agile and sturdy car. The ribs on the sides of the vehicle seem to elongate the car while the clean lines which end at the rear accentuate the angular shape of the body. The rear features distinct styling which emphasises the car’s muscular stance. The innovative rear lights also use LED technology.
Handling performance and comfort levels are exceptional thanks to the new revised MacPherson front suspension system that offers maximum rigidity under side loads. The rear suspension is a Multilink system that balance handling performance and ride comfort using aluminium wishbones which allows for a weight reduction of over10 kg compared to conventional systems.
The new electric power steering system (dual pinion active steering) ensures an excellent steering feel and is integrated with the vehicle’s active safety systems.
The new Giulietta’s hydraulic, power-assisted braking system comprises two crossover, independent circuits and has proven to be particularly effective to allow quick and progressive braking, with shorter stopping distances. It is equipped with an ABS anti-lock braking system with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD).
Other safety features include VDC, Alfa Romeo’s interpretation of Electronic Stability Program, and the ASR (Anti Slip Regulation) system, which is an integral part of the VDC and optimises traction with brakes and engine control. CBC (Cornering Brake Control) also helps to maintain vehicle stability, minimising any understeer or oversteer.
The VDC on the new Giulietta intervenes in a discreet manner owing to its combination with the DST (Dynamic Steering Torque), the ‘active electronic steering’ that automatically carries out corrections and also controls oversteer over surfaces with low grip.
The HBA system (Hydraulic Brake Assistance) in the new Giulietta automatically increases brake circuit pressure under emergency braking situations. There is also a Hill-holder system which maintains the braking action for a few seconds after the brake has been released.
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is fitted with a new Electronic Q2 system which improves the transfer of drive torque to the wheels and, in particular, guarantees excellent cornering behaviour thus making the car safer and more enjoyable during a sporty drive or in poor road grip conditions.
The new Giulietta has been awarded the prestigious Euro NCAP five-star rating and an overall score of 87/100, an extraordinary result that makes it one of the safest hatchbacks in the world.
