Reports suggest that a  production Alfa Romeo 4C will be officially unveiled next summer, months ahead of its originally anticipated 2014 Detroit show debut.

Unveiled as a concept at last year’s Geneva Motor show, the 4C is a compact rear-drive coupe that uses lightweight construction and a new turbocharged 1.8-litre I-4 engine. Alfa Romeo is aiming to keep the car’s curb weight under 2,000 pounds, making the expected 230 hp output of the base engine go even farther. As we previously reported, a higher-performance version with about 300 hp is in the works. The engine will also be destined for other models within the Fiat-Chrysler group.
