It’s official! Prima Merdu/Bermaz, the sole importers and distributors of Mazda in Malaysia have finally launched the long-awaited 2013 Mazda 6 Sedan and Grand Touring in Skyactiv-G 2.0 and Skyactiv-G 2.5 guises.
Embodying the whole ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ styling, both Mazda 6 Sedan and Grand Touring take its design cues from the Mazda Shinari and Takeri concept cars. Mazda said that eventhough the headlamp units have a soft-looking outline that prevents them from looking too aggressive, they still spark “a sense of fearlessness that evokes a predatory animal pursuing prey”.
The ‘Kodo’ design language then makes its way to the side of the car where three character lines across the shoulder meet the sharp rear end. In terms of aerodynamic, the new Mazda 6 features a front skirt and a rear spoiler with striking shape to evoke the boldness of the car. The rear spoiler has unique shape that wraps around the boot lid and does not detract from the 6’s looks.
The interior is very driver focused, with the necessary buttons and touchscreen located just at the right position for the driver to reach without interfering his focus on the road. The touchscreen, which is only available for 2.5-litre models acts as a display for the reverse camera and GPS. Also exclusive for the 2.5-litre models are the 11-speaker BOSE audio system and paddle shifters. Other features inside the cabin include dual zone automatic climate control, six airbags and 60:40 foldable rear seats.
The Skyactiv Technology used in the new Mazda 6 comprises the Skyactiv-G engine, Skyactiv-Drive, Skyactiv-Body, Skyactiv-Chassis as well as i-ELOOP and i-STOP, which will be explained later. The Skyactiv-G engine is said to be more fuel efficient (up to 15 percent) and clean without compromising its power. It is equipped with a balance shaft to reduce noise thus providing a quite and smooth driving experience. The 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine produces 153 hp at 6,000 rpm and torque is rated at 200 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G, on the other hand, has 185 hp and 250 Nm at its disposal.
Coupled to the Skyactiv-G engines is the Skyactiv-Drive transmission that promises fast and precise gear shifting. It varies the drive torque and shift timing depending on the speed of the vehicle. There is also a system called Kickdown Switch which is a small spike in resistance to pedal depression for a more precise shift control.
To improve fuel efficiency, Mazda has fitted the new 6 with the revolutionary i-ELOOP and i-STOP technologies. i-ELOOP is actually a regenerative braking system that captures the energy lost during deceleration and stores it as electrical power in its Electric Double Layer Capacitor. The power is then used to power the car’s electrical equipment. Meanwhile, the i-STOP is responsible in shutting down the engine when the car comes to a stop, similar to a hybrid car. The engine then restarts just 0.35 seconds after the pedal is depressed again. When combined, both system can improve fuel economy by up to 10 percent.
Both Mazda 6 Sedan and Grand Touring are CBU models imported from Japan. Available in five colour palettes – Snowflake White Pearl, Aluminium Metallic, Soul Red, Meteor Grey and Blue Reflex, the new 2013 Mazda 6 Sedan Skyactiv-G 2.0, Skyactiv-G 2.5 and Grand Touring Skyactiv-G 2.5 are priced at RM155,159, RM184,648 and RM188,648 respectively (on the road without insurance).

The exterior designs have sturdy anatomies that instantaneously convey big-cat toughness that is beautiful, sexy, and strong. For the interior, focus was on creating a refined environment and high quality, with tasteful coordination of design elements throughout.
This all-new car has been developed drawing on the full potential of SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, with refinement gleaned from the extensive implementation in the Mazda CX-5. The benefits are even greater with the new Mazda6 as it has a lower center of gravity and accordingly smaller roll movements, and its lower weight makes for brisker, more responsive off-the-line acceleration and sharper braking. Also, a sedan’s lower aspect-ratio tyres make for good handling stability and direct feedback on paved roads.
Along with the class-leading SKYACTIV-G 2.0 is the newly developed SKYACTIV-G 2.5, a 2,488cc, inline-four, DOHC, 16-valve configuration with direct petrol injection. The SKYACTIV-G 2.5 weighs about the same as the MZR 2.5 but gives significantly better performance. It produces 10–15% more torque than the MZR 2.5; its torque levels are among the highest in the class. With its balance shaft, the SKYACTIV-G 2.5 is quieter than the SKYACTIV-G 2.0. Its performance is comparable with that of engines in higher-class models.
The new Mazda6 with the SKYACTIV-DRIVE is the first Mazda model in which the accelerator pedal has a Kickdown Switch which heightens the pleasure of controlling the car.
Based on Mazda’s “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom” philosophy, the new car comes with the high-efficiency SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY powertrain, the light, stiff SKYACTIV-BODY, i-stop, “i-ELOOP” brake energy regeneration system and “i-ACTIVSENSE” advanced safety technologies. The distinct wedge profile gives an impression of speed, with a compact, elegant cabin that is positioned toward the rear, resulting in handsome proportions. An imposing and stylish side view is created by the long wheelbase, large-diameter wheels, and boldly shaped front and rear fenders. The shoulders embody the same design theme as those of the Mazda SHINARI and TAKERI.

The form resulting from the combination of the three character lines across the shoulder powerfully conveys a sense that the whole body is about to leap forward. At the rear, too, strength is combined with sharpness, thereby helping to give the entire car a look of purpose.
The aerodynamic benefits are heightened by body attachments in the form of a front skirt and a rear spoiler. The front skirt’s left and right corners have a strikingly characterful shape that gives a sense of dynamism and poise. The rear spoiler smoothes the air flowing over the body. It has a unique shape that wraps around the boot lid. Its design does not detract from the sedan’s refined looks.
The interior features an integrated driving environment – one where the user can focus on the drive without anxiety and where everything the user sees, touches, and operates heightens the excitement about the driving experience. Great importance was placed on projecting a touch of quality.
