BMW Group Malaysia has unveiled the all-new BMW R 1200 GS, the latest addition to the Gelande Sport or GS family after the F 800 GS and F 700 GS. With new full-LED headlight and redesigned boxer engine as main features, the new R 1200 GS is ready to set the benchmark further in the travel enduro segment.
Apart from the trademark ‘beak’ above the front wheel, the new R 1200 GS features a triple-section front panel carrier made of magnesium, resulting in a 60 percent weight reduction over previous model. Providing utmost comfort for both rider and pillion are the adjustable seats with two height and tilt angle options. The passenger seat can be moved closer to the rider while the increased gap from the topcase enables the pillion to lean back for a more relaxed ride.
The new R 1200 GS is also the first motorcycle in the world to feature full-LED main headlight, which comprises of two LEDs for low and high beam, along with an additional four LEDs for the daytime running lights (DRL) and side lights. While the DRL comes as standard for both Dynamic and Touring package, the full-LED headlight is only available for the Dynamic package.
The redesigned 1,170 cc flat twin engine is combined with a six-speed gearbox planted in the engine housing to produce 125 hp at 7,700 rpm and 125 Nm of maximum torque at 6,000 rpm. For the first time in a GS motorcycle, an E-gas system, which is an electromotive throttle actuator is fitted as standard. The system works by transferring throttle command directly to the engine control system via a sensor in the accelerator twist grip.
Dynamic ESA, a semi-active suspension system is fitted to monitor the vertical movement of both front and rear wheels. The sensor adapts the damping automatically while the Dynamic ESA adjusts the springs struts at both ends via electrically controlled regulation valves. This allows the bike to navigate through uneven off-road terrains steadily.
Another new addition the R 1200 GS is a multiple wet clutch with eight friction discs, as opposed to the single-disc dry clutch used in the previous model. With an anti-hopping mechanism, the clutch system prevents hopping of the rear wheel under heavy breaking or during downshifting.
Apart from standard ABS and Automatic Stability Control (ASC), the R 1200 GS also comes with five riding modes, namely ‘Rain’, ‘Road’, ‘Dynamic’, ‘Enduro’ and ‘Enduro Pro’. Each mode features three different E-gas and ABS settings, and four ASC settings.

The body features of the all- new BMW R 1200 GS range from the hallmark ‘beak’ above the front wheel to the fuel tank and side trims panels through to the seat, highlighting the bike’s powerful appearance. The characteristically marked fly line now runs boldly from the typically dipping ‘beak’, creating a spray guard above the front wheel which enhances its aerodynamics whilst conveying the familiar GS look but with a fresh aesthetic appeal.
The expressive front section of the machine has been designed to include an innovative triple-section front panel carrier made of magnesium, a break-proof and tough component which gives the all- new BMW R 1200 GS a 60 percent weight reduction. While the front panel which bears the detailed instrument cluster, windshield adjustment and lighting provides greater visibility while emphasising a rugged enduro look.
Rider’s comfort plays a vital role in the all- new BMW R 1200 GS as the seat is now narrower in the front section for greater freedom of movement and is adjustable to two heights as well as tilt angle. The passenger seat also comes with an option to select a position closer to the rider for supported stability and agility along with an increased gap from the topcase which enables passengers to lean back for a more relaxed ride.
The First Motorcycle in the World with Full-LED Main Headlight.
The all- new BMW R1200 GS shows the innovative prowess of BMW Motorrad with the first ever full LED headlight with integrated daytime running light. The headlight’s LEDs are strikingly distinctive and powerful with their double glass lenses, and comprises of two LED units each for low and high beam, along with an additional four LED units for daytime running and side light. As for the headlight design, while remaining faithful to the typical GS dual headlight concept, it has been adapted to be more closely merged. The LED headlights will be available as a standard in the Dynamic package of the all- new BMW R1200 GS
Additionally, fitted as a standard in both the Dynamic package & Touring package, the daytime running function illuminates the road with a level of brilliant clarity not previously known and motorcyclists would benefit from significantly improved perceptibility in the daytime for added safety.
Completely Newly Redesigned Engine for Maximum Riding Dynamics
In terms of superior performance, the all- new BMW R 1200 GS takes a significant step with its redesigned engine. Powered by a 2-cylinder boxer engine with a 6-speed gearbox, the all- new R 1200 GS is capable of churning out a power output of 92kW with 125 bhp at 7700 rpm, and achieves a maximum torque of 125 Nm at 6,000rpm. While the boxer engine still uses air/liquid cooling, the coolant oil is now replaced with a glycol water mixture that ensures a high level of heat absorption capacity for more efficient heat dissipation.
For the first time in a GS motorcycle, an electromotive throttle actuator or E-gas system is fitted as standard and provides significant improvements in controllability and response. Rider commands are transferred directly via a sensor in the accelerator twist grip to the engine control system which regulates the throttle valve electronically. An electronic cruise control function which allows riders to control their speed is also fitted as a standard, making lengthy rides more relaxed and comfortable.
The gearbox and clutch are now integrated in the engine housing, which proves beneficial in terms of weight balance and response of the enduro as a whole. In addition to saving space and weight, the new gearbox (two transmission shafts, one drive shaft and one output shaft) means there is no longer a need for additional transmission oil volume previously required for lubrication.
The all- new BMW R 1200 GS also comes with a multiple wet clutch system with eight friction discs instead of the previous single-disc dry clutch. The clutch system is fitted with an anti-hopping mechanism that addresses the needs of ambitious drivers as the brake torque is now passed to the rear heel at a reduced level during coasting. This prevents brief blocking or hopping of the rear wheel when applying brakes heavily and changing down at the same time.
Tapping into a whole new range of possibilities for maximum riding safety and performance, the all- new BMW R 1200 GS comes equipped with Dynamic ESA, a semi-active suspension which monitors vertical movement of the front and rear wheel control with a spring travel sensor in each position. The sensor adapts the damping automatically depending on riding conditions and manoeuvres, while the Dynamic ESA also responds to the ABS control brake manoeuvre, adjusting the spring struts at the front and rear by electrically controlled regulation valves. This offers riders an unequal sense of security on uneven, and off road terrain.
An innovative exhaust gas system with an electronically controlled exhaust flap delivers optimum performance characteristics coupled with an earthy boxer sound. The exhaust system is also designed to meet current and future exhaust emissions standards.
“The innovatively designed stainless steel exhaust system of the all- new BMW R 1200 GS enables emissions to be regulated by an oxygen sensor controlled catalytic converter, for added efficiency. As it has always been our commitment to deliver vehicles that are in line with our BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, the all- new BMW R 1200 GS is another welcomed addition to our range of vehicles that represents our promise for a greener Malaysia,” commented Dr. Pils.
Automatic Stability Control (ASC) and Five Riding Modes for Enhanced Performance.
For optimum adaptation to the rider’s individual needs and purpose, the all- new BMW R 1200 GS comes equipped with five different riding modes for the first time- ‘Rain’, ‘Road’, ‘Dynamic’, ‘Enduro’ and ‘Enduro Pro’. Each mode features three different E-gas and ABS settings, and four ASC settings with varying engine characteristics.
To choose the required setting, the ‘Mode’ switch on the right handlebar would activate a display on the instrument panel to select a desired riding mode:
‘Rain’ mode provides soft and responsive characteristics to support the rider on wet surfaces or difficult grip conditions.
‘Road’ mode ensures optimum performance with spontaneous, linear throttle on dry roads. This mode combines supple controllability with an equal build-up of torque.
‘Dynamic’ mode reveals the sportiest face of the all- new BMW R 1200 GS as a more spontaneous and direct throttle response is offered, with restrained ASC intervention and tighter damping, which allows the machine to bear its full potential.
‘Enduro’ mode gives even the most novice riders a chance to explore new enduro worlds, with soft throttle response, restrained control intervention from the ASC, and optimum brake distribution with ABS control.
‘Enduro Pro’ mode offers more ambitious enduro riders an added dimension of riding fun with spontaneous engine response, as the ASC function that is set to professional mode permits considerably more slip, and further controllability of the all- new BMW R 1200 GS machine.
New Tyre Wheel Dimensions, Tailored Specially for the BMW R 1200 GS
For the first time ever in a large enduro bike, the tyre dimensions of 120/70 R19 is used in the all- new BMW R 1200 GS. The weight-optimised 10-spoke light alloy wheel is enlarged to 3.0 inches, offering a wider contact area for high levels of efficient cornering and deceleration forces, with added benefits of increased power transmission when braking.
A special tyre contour tailored to the all- new BMW R 1200 GS also guarantees maximum neutrality for a significant level of riding precision. The rear wheel also receives an enhancement with a size 170/60 R17 tyre which has been enlarged to 4.0 to 4.5 inches for improved traction, cornering and riding dynamics.
In keeping to the BMW Motorrad principle ‘Safety 360’, the all- new BMW R 1200 GS is fitted with ABS as standard, and its brake system has been extensively revised with radially mounted Brembo Monobloc brake calipers at the front and a larger disc brake at the rear.
