2015 BMW i8 02

The ultra-futuristic car you see piloted by Tom Cruise in his action-filled flick Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol, is now on the floor of the 65th Frankfurt Motor Show. Dubbed as the BMW i8, the plug-in hybrid 2+2 sports car is expected to arrive in US showrooms in spring of 2014 for a price of USD135,925.

Like the i3, the i8 is built around the Life and Drive modules. The Life module consists a passenger cell made from carbon- fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) while drive system, high-voltage battery, chassis, and crash and structural functions are put under the Drive module. The sculptured body panels delivers an exceptional coefficient drag of Cd 0.26, while kerb weight is at 1,490 kg.

The i8 is driven by a combination of BMW TwinPower Turbo and BMW eDrive technology; a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder sends 231 hp and 320 Nm to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox while a hybrid synchronous electric motor outputs 131 hp and 250 Nm through the front wheels via a two-stage automatic transmission. With a total system output of 362 hp and 570 Nm, the i8 completes 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in just 4.4 seconds.
