The 100 percent electric Nissan Leaf is finally available for the Malaysian public. The car, which has gone through a series of tests and pilot programmes since 2012, was launched by Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) yesterday at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS13) at PWTC.
On the outside, the Leaf features a compact hood, roof spoiler, rear diffuser and LED headlamps as well as LED rear lights. Inside, the cabin features a combination of leather and suede as well as a ‘dial-free’ centre cluster. Driving status can be viewed via a Twin Combination Digital Meter that shows vehicle speed, battery power level, estimated driving range and an eco-meter as well.
Rear seats are fitted with three sets of three-point seatbelts and Isofix and can be folded to access the 720 litres of boot space (370 litres in normal seat configuration). Standard equipment in the Leaf ranges from Climate Control Timer, Charging Timer, range management as well as an Eco indicator.
As reported before, the Nissan Leaf is powered by an electric motor that runs on a 24 kWh battery pack. Consisting of 48 battery modules, the electric motor produces 90 kW and 360V. Four drive modes are available – D, D-Eco, B and B-Eco mode. A full charge will drive the LEAF for an estimated range of 195 kilometres according to NEDC.
According to ETCM, the Leaf is costs 75 percent cheaper compared to petrol-powered equivalent. while maintaining it can save up to 80 percent over a five-year period. It comes with a home-charging unit that can charge a complete drained battery in 4 hours. A solar panel, which maintains the charge of the 12V battery that runs the lamps, wipers and other accessories, is fitted under the rear roof spoiler as well.
In terms of safety, the car comes with six airbags, ABS, Brake Assist, Hill Start Assist and Vehicle Dynamics Control. The Zone Body construction offers high levels of occupant protection. The Lead has received a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.
The new Nissan Leaf comes in Pearl White, Blue Ocean, Metallic Slate and Super Black and is priced at RM168,800. The price includes a home charging unit and a three-year or 100,000 km warranty.
On a side note, ETCM has also launched the Nissan Almera Nismo Performance Package. It consists of a five-piece aerokit, 16-inch Nismo alloys wrapped in Continental rubbers, Nismo exhaust muffler and a Nismo Performance Suspension system. A cheaper Nismo Aero Package that includes only the aerokit and rims is available as well.
The Nismo Performance Package can be purchased at RM13,000 while the Nismo Aero Package is priced at RM8,000. Both kits are available for all variants of the Almera.
