Mazda’s Skyactive lineup receives a new member today, and it is the new Mazda5 MPV. The people-carrier now gets full treatment of the Skyactiv technology and joins the likes of the CX-5, Mazda6, Mazda3, and Biante in the family.
Under the hood, the MPV gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder Skyactiv-G engine mated to a six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission. Total output for the new engine is 149 hp and 190 Nm of torque, which is a significant increase compared to the old 2.0-litre mill in the non-Skyactiv model.
The new 5 does 0 to 100 km/h in just 11.4 seconds with a top speed of 194 km/h. With I-Stop start/stop system included, the MPV claims a combined EC fuel economy of 6.6 litres per 100 km.
While retaining most design elements of its predecessor, the vehicle receives a host of new features in the cabin. It now has dual headrest monior, a large vehicle info display and a central screen that displays navigation, a rear view camera as well as CD, DVD, MP3 and USB connectivity, of which can be located beneath the shift lever panel.
Other equipment in the cabin includes driver and passenger’s side panel trays, cupholders, steering-mounted audio controls and rear ventilation system with two vents at the rear.
Meanwhile, the Karakuri seventh seat is placed in the middle of the second row. The armrest first folds up to form the backrest of the seventh seat, then the cushion of the seat on the left is flipped forward to reveal the seat cushion for the Karakuri seat, which fits between the two seats when folded out.
There is also a utility box that is stored beneath the cushion of the right second-row seat. This gives passengers on the second row a pair of cupholders with a storage net for small items. A 6.3-litre compartment becomes available beneath the seat cushion when the seventh seat or utility box is in use. Safety-wise, the MPV is equipped with dual front airbags, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, DSC and TCS.
The new Mazda5 is available in four colour choices – Aluminium Metallic, Crystal White Pearl Mica, Grey Mica, and Jet Black Mica – with a price tag of RM153,019 OTR without insurance.
Mazda5 Goes SkyActiv
Mazda’s value-for-money luxury people-carrier is now at the leading edge of automotive engineering. The new Mazda5 continues the trend of cutting-edge technology for Mazda, started with the worldwide success of the crossover SUV CX-5, followed by the multi award winning Mazda6, and then by its equally impressive smaller bretheren – the Mazda3 – and also the family favourite Biante MPV.
Retaining the fluid and eye-catching “Nagare flow” design of the exterior, and the overall good sense and high practicality of the interior of the previous generation version, the latest Mazda5 is fully equipped with SkyActiv Technology, SkyActiv-G, SkyActiv-Drive and I-Stop.
The Mazda5 is a prominent and popular model in Mazda’s line-up, having earned itself a solid position in the C-MAV (Compact Multi-Activity Vehicle) market, thanks to its superior packaging and the unique functionality, including its flexible seat arrangements, powered sliding rear doors, stylish design, outstanding handling and high level of safety. The new Mazda5 with SkyActiv Technology builds on these assets while benefiting from greater attention to detail in reducing noise, vibration and harshness, as well as delivering superior environmental performance.
The new Mazda5 offers a smart solution to the user’s every need by establishing a balance between diverse functionality and outstanding performance. Wrapped in the stylish and modern body is a truly versatile and spacious interior. The new Mazda5 offers the unique ‘6+One’ packaging concept that earned strong support for the previous model. Versatile ‘+One’ functions include the central walk-through passageway, the hideaway Karakuri seventh seat and Karakuri utility box, and the rich diversity of possible seating arrangements.
This thoroughly modern and people-friendly vehicle delivers the unique Mazda Zoom-Zoom driving experience, now made even more so as it benefits fully from the brand’s much-touted SkyActiv Technology offering re-engineered engines, transmissions, bodies and chassis.
The SkyActiv engine earned the distinction of RJC TECHNOLOGY OF THE YEAR 2012, awarded by the Automotive Researchers’ & Journalists’ Conference of Japan for SkyActiv-G and SkyActiv Drive.
It is also the winner of the 2013 GREEN CAR TECHNOLOGY AWARD, USA – receiving strong green credentials for the revolutionary SkyActiv Technology.
