Smart Fortwo and Forfour Reveal - 1

After teasing us with a video clip showing the evolution of its Tridion Cell last week, Smart Automobile has revealed two all-new 2016 models, the 3rd Generation Smart Fortwo and the 2rd Generation Smart Forfour compact city vehicles. Both models is said to be developed cooperatively with Renault, sharing about 70 percent of its parts with the 3rd Generation Renault Twingo.

With the same overall exterior look featuring a ‘one-and-a-half-box’ design of a higher bonnet for a sportier character, the Fortwo maintains its unique length of just 2,690 mm, while the Forfour is 800 mm longer at 3,690 mm wearing a slightly longer Tridion Cell to accommodate the extra door with a roof line that slopes slightly downwards towards the rear. Both are 100 mm wider and 10 mm taller that the outgoing models.

The friendly, self-assured fascia features a larger signature Smart grille with perforated honeycomb pattern that fades toward the outside. The grille can be specified in a variety of colours to match or contrast the bodypanel paintjob. The air vent at the botton also features a honeycomb pattern.

Inside, the designers uses a ‘Loop’ concept featuring a leitmotif interior. It’s basically a two-tone interior with the fabric coverings that matches the exterior paintjob. It features a semi-circular instruments cluster, spherical air-conditioning vents and a floating infotainment centre console. For entertainment, a JBL sound system using a 6-channel DSP amplifier and 8 speakers for the Fortwo with the Forfour getting an 8-channel syetem with 12 speakers.

There’s nothing under the hood as the Smart is a rear-engined layout. Two engine options are available, a 999 cc naturally aspirated system that produces 71 hp and 91 Nm of torque at 2,850 rpm, and a 898 cc turbocharged mill that makes 90 hp and 135 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm. Both will be mated to either a 5-speed manual or the twinamic 6-speed dual clutch transmission. It is said that a basic 60 hp petrol engine will be offered to extend the range a few months after its market launch.

Apart from its rigid Tridion safety passenger cell made out of ultra-high strength hot-formed steels and maximum-strength multiphase steel, safety features include Crosswind Assist, forward collision warning and Lane Keeping Assist. Other features like ABS, ASR, ESP, Hill hold function and Brake Assist are standard.

As a small compact vehicle, the new Smart boasts a new turning circle benchmark of just 6.95 m from kerb to kerb and 7.30 m from wall to wall. The Forfour makes the turn in 8.65 m and 8.95 m respectively.

Sales for both models is said to start in Europe by November this year.
