Moto Guzzi Malaysia marks its first year of operation with the launch of two models – the new Moto Guzzi California 1400 Touring as well as the California 1400 Custom. The launch was held at the company’s own 3S centre in Glenmarie, Shah Alam, witnessed by President and CEO of Moto Guzzi Malaysia, Datuk SM Zulkifli SM Amin and Brendan Ang, Piaggio Group Area Sales Manager for Asia Pacific 2 Wheeler.
Sharing the same engine, transmission and riding assistance, both Touring and Custom are essentially the same bike, save for the styling. Powering the California 1400 is a 1,380 cc “Quattrovalvole” V2 engine that is said to be the biggest in Europe in the V-twin category. It has 96 hp at 6,500 rpm and a healthy 120 Nm of torque, channeled to the wheel via a six-speed transmission and cardan final drive.
The big bore mill is fueled by 52 mm Magnetti Marelli throttle body and a ride-by-wire engine management system that accommodates three engine management mappings – Turismo (Touring), Veloce (Fast) and Pioggia (Rain). In addition to that, both models also come with the latest generation traction control (MGCT) which can be adjusted to three different levels.
To reduce friction losses, the engine has been enhanced with four valves per cylinder, driven by an overhead cam in each bank, through a roller rockers system. It also incorporates double ignition system and two oxygen sensors to improve emissions and fuel economy by 15 to 20 percent.
In terms of styling, the California 1400 stands out with its polygon-shaped headlight with daytime running light (DRL) and a 21-litre metal fuel tank that comes with the Eagle logo and two side panels. Meanwhile, the rear section of the cruiser features a sculpted mudguard that also houses the LED taillights and indicators.
Similarities for both models stop there. The Touring version is equipped with a windshield, chromium supplementary lights, 35-litre side panniers with guard kit, engine guard and an electronic anti-theft system. It comes in either white “Eldorado” or black “Ambassador” themes, backed by a host of optional accessories such as leather side panniers, gel and leather two seat saddle, top boxes, slip on exhaust system and many more.
On the other hand, the Custom variant is said to have at least 20 new features over the Touring. Those include a two seat saddle with the Eagle logo, drag bar handlebars and lacquered black wheels with red Moto Guzzi logo. Like the Touring, the Custom also can be equipped with accessories like leather side panniers, gel comfort two seat saddle, and top boxes, to name a few.
Prices for the new Moto Guzzi California 1400 Touring starts at RM138,888 while the Custom variant goes for RM128,888. Both prices are nett selling price.
