Perodua has officially taken the covers off its all-new Perodua Axia in an event held in Kuala Lumpur. The automaker’s 10th model was launched by the Right Honourable Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Dato’ Muhyiddin Yassin, witnessed by Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia, His Excellency Makio Miyagawa, Perodua Chairman, YBhg Tan Sri Asmat Kamaluddin and Daihatsu Motor Company Chairman, Koichi Ina.

The hatchback is available in four variants – Advance, SE, Standard E and Standard G – from a competitive price in the region of RM25,000. The¬†Axia is also Malaysia’s first Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV), having met the standard set for A-segment cars and is produced at the new Perodua Global Manufacturing plant, with support form its partner, Daihatsu Motor Company of Japan.

Regardless of the variant, the Axia is powered by a locally-assembled all-aluminium 1.0-litre 1KR engine with 66 hp at 6,000 rpm and 90 Nm of torque at 3,600 rpm under its belt. Using a specially formulated fully-synthetic engine oil (0W-20 API SN), the engine returns an impressive fuel efficiency of 21.6 km per litre for the manual variant and 20.1 km per litre for the automatic variant.

The Axia is built around a high-tensile steel frame that helps to reduce weight without compromising safety. Its engine and transmission matching has also been improved to better gear shifting while the tyres are low rolling resistance type to reduce road friction. All of these, alongside the use of electric power steering and LED lights, help to reduce the weight of the car to below 900 kg to achieve the EEV status.

But the Axia is not all about the EEV status. Measuring 3,640 mm long, 1,620 mm wide, and 1,510 mm high, the Axia also offers bigger cabin space and larger legroom over the Viva to accommodate more passengers and cargo. The front and rear passenger seats can be folded flat, allowing the car to have five seating arrangements. The 260-litre boot is bigger than Myvi’s and allows for storage up to four luggages.

There are plenty of storage compartments in the cabin as well. Depending on variants, you’ll get things like a built-in tissue compartment, a multi-purpose container, four bottle holders, three cup holders, two shopping hooks and front and rear door bottle holders and pockets. An anti-snatch hook is also available in all variants except the Standard E.

Equipment-wise, the hatchback comes with projector headlamps (halogen for Standard E and G), retractable mirror housings with turn signals and LED rear lights. It rides on 14-inch five-spoke alloys. Inside, there is a three-section instrument panel and a multimedia system that includes a host of features including a navigation system, DVD player, Tello Pages Search Integration, TM WiFi Hotspot locator, USB, and Bluetooth, to name a few. The Standard E is not fitted with a radio while the rest of the variant is fitted with DVD player with USB, MP3 and such.

In terms of safety, the Axia is rated 4-Star by ASEAN NCAP, and gets dual airbags across the variant and ABS with EBD and Brake Assist for SE and Advance. In addition, the car also comes with front corner sensors and a small turning radius of 4.5 metres for easy manoeuvring.

As for pricing, the manual-only Standard E goes starts from RM24,600 for the solid colour and RM25,000 for the metallic. The manual Standard G is priced from RM29,800 (solid) and RM30,200 (metallic) while the automatic Standard G starts from RM32,800 (solid) and RM33,200 (metallic). The better-specced manual SE goes for RM36,800 (solid) and RM37,200 (metallic) while the automatic variant has a price tag of RM39,800 (solid) and RM40,200 (metallic). At the top of the range, the Advance, which only comes in automatic variant, goes for RM42,130 (solid) and RM42,530 (metallic). All prices are on-the-road and inclusive of Perodua’s new 5-year warranty.

All variants can be had in Midnight Blue, Ebony Black, Glittering Silver and Ivory White as standard colours. Additionally, the Standard E and G models can be had in exclusive Lemongrass Green and Cherry Blossom while buyers of the SE and Advance models can opt for exclusive Lava Red and Sunflower Yellow.
