Labeling it as a “Product Updates Honda City Year Make (2003-2004) & Honda Jazz Year Make 2004” on its official website, Honda Malaysia is, according to various news reports, recalling a total of 15,734 units of the mentioned car models to replace a faulty airbag system. This recall supposedly follows a case where a 43-year-old Malaysian woman who was killed in an accident involving her 2003 Honda City fitted with the faulty airbag system.
The reports all stated that the Takata-made airbag was defective and that during the accident which happened earlier this year on 27th July, the airbag inflator ruptured causing some shrapnel to hit the driver, resulting in her death. The story was made even more tragic as she was pregnant and the foetus also did not survive.
Honda Malaysia, however, did not disclose the number of vehicles affected by the faulty airbag publicly, but other news sources reported that 15,612 units of Honda City made between 2003 to 2004 and 122 units of Honda Jazz made in 2004 are involved in the recall.
Honda Malaysia, it seems, has started calling up owners but because this recall involves vehicles that are made about 10 years ago, those who now owns such cars bought through second-hand or private dealers should verify their VIN numbers to check if they are involved.
