2016 Cadillac CTS-V - Main

This is the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V. With 640 hp and a staggering 855 Nm of torque, the sedan is the most powerful product in the brand’s history and it already has Mercedes-Benz’s 5.5-litre V8 and BMW M4’s 4.4-litre V8 in its sight.

The secret behind the CTS-V’s potent output lies in the company’s new 6.2-litre LT4 V8 engine, which employs a compact 1.7-litre supercharger unit, direct injection as well as a cylinder deactivation system called Active Fuel Management.

The supercharger rotor, while being smaller compared to the previous engine, generates boost earlier in the rpm range to allow higher maximum rpm. To support its high output and great cylinder pressure, the engine itself boasts Rotocast A356T6 aluminum cylinder heads and lightweight titanium intake valves.

Unlike its predecessor, which came with a six-speed manual transmission, the new model is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The unit, codenamed 8L90, is enhanced with Performance Algorithm Shifting that is said to match the performance of rivals’ dual-clutch/semi-auto transmission but with the refinement of a torque converter-type auto gearbox.

In terms of performance, CTS-V is able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a scant 3.7 seconds, before hitting a top speed of over 320 km/h.

In order to harness all the power to the ground, the chassis has been thoroughly enhanced with unique and revised construction elements such as stronger rear cradle-to-rocker braces, strut tower-to-tower brace and V-braces for the engine compartment, resulting in a 25 percent increase in structural stiffness.

Another highlight is the new Magnetic Ride Control, which uses real-life data to control the damping characteristics of all four dampers. Meanwhile, Performance Traction Management offers a Track mode in addition of five settings of torque reduction and brake intervention for track driving.

According to Cadillac, every inch of the exterior is designed with purpose to function. For instance, the carbon fibre hood comes with a vent that pulls hot air out of the engine bay. Other than that, you’ll find larger intakes on the fascia that feed more air to the engine, a front splitter, wider fenders, aero-optimised rocker mouldings as well as 19-inch forged aluminium wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres.

An optional carbon fibre package takes aerodynamics to a higher level with the inclusion of a more aggressive front splitter, hood vent, rear diffuser and spoiler.

Inside, the sedan boasts 20-way heated and ventilated front seats trimmed in semi-aniline leather and suede, as well as the optional Recaro sport seats. It has a 12.3-inch instrument panel display with V-Series graphics along with a reconfigurable head-up display. The list of equipment includes CUE with Bluetooth, Bose audio system, Siri Eyes Free voice recognition system, wireless phone charging, WiFi hotspot and the controversial Performance Data Recorder.

The Cadillac CTS-V is expected to make its world debut at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show and will be launched in the market late next year.
