Finally, the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid has been officially launched here in Malaysia. The futuristic supercar made its formal introduction at the 2015 BMW World Malaysia held at the Bukit Kiara Indoor Arena in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Unveiled back in 2009 at the International Motor Show Germany, the i8 wears a unique sports car design with distinctive LED headlights and taillights, butterfly doors and 20-inch BMW i light alloy wheels. Inside, there’s full leather ‘Spheric’ upholstery, antracite headliner and instrument panel with leather surface.
Although the BMW i8 looks awesome inside out, it’s under the hood that makes this futuristic sports car stand against other rival brands. Its 1.5-litre in-line 3-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engine is coupled to its eDrive technology electric motor to produce a total output of 362 hp at 5,800 rpm and 570 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm.
The hybrid system is mated to a 6-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission which enables a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 250 km/h. It eats up 2.1 litre per 100 kilometer, emitting 49 g/km of CO2.
The BMW i8 is priced at RM1,188,800 on-the-road without insurance.
