Skoda Fabia R5 01

The FIA has given the new Skoda Fabia R5 rally the green light for next season’s World Rally Championship. Czech Republic’s latest rally machine is based on the third generation model and will supersede the successful Fabia Super 2000.

In line with FIA regulations, the R5 is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine that replaces the 2.0-litre unit found in the old model. Weighing a scant 1,230 kg, the car rides on MacPherson struts and features a five-speed sequential gearbox that channels the output to all four wheels.

According to Skoda, the development team took 15 months to find the right formula for the R5. Its homologation process, meanwhile, involved 10,000 km of testings on a wide range of roads and conditions in the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Greece, Spain and Finland.

Dubbed as “pure high-tech”, the R5 has very high standards to live up to. The model it’s replacing achieved a total of almost 50 international and national titles since its introduction in 2009.
