2016 Opel Astra 02

The new Opel Astra has been revealed, a few months ahead of its official unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Coming into its 11th generation, the C-segment hatch is said to be leaner, more efficient and more agile than the model it is replacing.

According to Opel, the new Astra is 120 to 200 kg lighter than the tenth generation model, depending on model and trim level. The new architecture alone is 20 percent lighter while modifications to the chassis, which employs ultra high-strength steels, compact subframes and lighter axles resulted in another 50 kilograms of weight reduction.

The Astra will be available with a lineup of new petrol and diesel engines. Choices for the former comprise of a 1.0-litre ECOTEC turbo three-cylinder engine with 105 hp for an entry-level variant or a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo engine delivering 145 hp and 250 Nm of torque. The diesel, meanwhile, comes in the form of a 1.6-litre CDTI engine that churns out 95 hp.

While many cars grow in size as they get older, the new Astra is designed to be five centimeters shorter and 2.6 centimeters shorter than its predecessor, resulting in a drag coefficient of below 0.30. Don’t let the size fool you because the cabin is promised to be roomier than before, with an extra 35 mm in the legroom thanks to the newly designed rear seats. The boffins at Opel have also managed to expand the distance between the front and rear seats.

In terms of styling, the Astra represents an evolution of the Monza concept with sharp headlights flanking a slim front grille along with a striking character line on the side and a divided C-pillar that creates the impression of a floating roof. Inside, the dashboard boasts a cleaner look, reduced number of control buttons and switches as well as a large touchscreen in the centre console.

On the equipment front, the hatchback features a new generation IntelliLink infotainment system, now compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and OnStar personal connectivity and assistant system for the first time in the brand’s history.
