Opel Astra TCR 01

Opel is expanding its activities in customer touring car racing. Latest, the automaker is developing a race car based on the all-new Astra for the forthcoming 2016 TCR International Series.

Inaugurated last year, the TCR series is based on a three-pillar concept that includes national and continental championships along with the global TCR International Series. The same set of regulations are applied across the series, enabling the TCR car to be used worldwide without having to be modified.

As for the car, it will feature a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine developing 330 hp and 410 Nm of maximum torque. It is set for testing in October, so expect the automaker to divulge more technical information by then.

“Touring car racing has always been an important part of Opel. The philosophy of the new TCR series corresponds to our idea of customer racing. We want to give ambitious privately owned teams a platform for exciting sport at reasonable costs,” chief marketing officer Tina Müller said.
