Toyota Pixis Mega 03

Toyota has launched the new Pixis Mega in Japan. The tallish kei-car is the newest addition to the Pixis family supplied by Daihatsu under an OEM agreement after the Pixis Space, Van/Truck and Epoch.

Created to offer versatility to cater the diverse needs and lifestyle of the Japanese people, the Pixis Mega offers a class-leading cabin height of 1,455 mm and an eye-point of 1,387 mm. While the boxy vehicle stands tall at 1,835 mm, Toyota says that its suspension and body structure have been “overhauled” to ensure stability.

In addition to the high eye-point, visibility for the drive is further enhanced thanks to an extra mirrors located below the passenger side mirror as well as in the upper interior sections of the rear doors.

One-touch electric sliding doors, which are positioned at 1,700 mm from the ground, ensure easy access into the cabin for young children and the elderly. For storage, the Pixis Mega boasts a 90-litre compartment (approximately 16 litres on 4WD models) beneath the trunk floor along with a large tray in front of the passenger seat and a storage pocket placed behind the centre console.

In terms of drivetrain, the Pixis Mega is available with a naturally-aspirated 660 cc three-cylinder engine that makes 51 hp and 60 Nm, and a turbocharged version of the same engine with an output of 64 hp and 90 Nm of torque. Eco-idling stop system, CVT and front-wheel-drive are standard across the range while all-wheel-drive is offered only for the turbo variant.

To offset its towering profile, Toyota has given its kei-car stiffer suspension system consisting of larger shock absorbers and stabilizers. The vehicle also gets optimised body panels and aerodynamic fins on its doors and tail lights, giving it a light and stable construction.
