The anticipated all-new Mazda MX-5 has been officially launched by Bermaz Motor Sdn Bhd, to the delight of the roadster’s fans in the country.
The fourth-generation model represents a major departure over its successor, bringing the award-winning Kodo design language and Skyactiv technology into the picture. In the words of Mazda, it is “lighter yet more rigid, more powerful yet more fuel efficient, faster yet safer, and more desirable yet more attainable.”
Inspired by the Japanese notion of ‘Jinba Ittai – horse and rider as one’, the MX-5 features sharp headlight design, matched with U-shaped tail lights. Of course, there’s the convertible soft top, 17-inch wheels as well as LED lights all around.
Like all recent Mazda cars, the MX-5 comes with a simplistic cabin, with circular air-conditioning vents and knobs and a ‘floating’ 7-inch touch display. On the equipment front, the Malaysian-spec model will come with leather-wrapped multi function steering wheel, leather upholstery, 9-speaker Bose audio system, headrest speakers and paddle shifters as standard.
Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder Skyactiv-G engine that pumps out a decent 158 hp at 6,000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. For now, only the six-speed automatic transmission makes it to our market. The crowd-favourite six-speed manual is expected to arrive in a few months.
Apart from Skyactiv body and chassis, the MX-5 also comes with i-Stop and i-Eloop regenerative braking system. The former automatically stops the engine when the car comes to a halt after braking (say, in stop-and-go traffic) while the latter captures energy lost during deceleration and stores it in a high capacity Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC).
As for safety, the MX-5 offers front and side airbags, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, Dynamic Stability Control, Traction Control, Adaptive Front Lighting, High Beam Control System and Lane Departure Warning System.
Price for the new Mazda MX-5 starts from RM226,376 (OTR with GST and insurance)
