2016 Smart Fortwo Cabrio 01

Smart has unveiled the second member to join the new Fortwo range; the third generation Fortwo Cabrio. The bite-size two-seater will be unveiled in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Set to go on sale worldwide early next year, the Fortwo Cabrio is described as “three cars in one” thanks to its brilliant ‘tritop’ soft top that can be closed, partially opened into a sliding canvas sunroof, or fully retracted into a true cabriolet. The roof bars need to be manually removed and stowed in the rear compartment.

The fabric soft top is available in blue denim, red or black and can be fully opened in just 12 seconds, even when driving at top speed. Owners will be provided with a three-button key, which allows them to lower the soft top from outside the car.

Apart from the folding soft top, not much changes have been done to the Fortwo. The car features the typical silhouette with short overhangs, striking waistline, trademark front grille with fading honeycomb insert and of course, the tridion safety cell.

Like its hardtop sibling, the Fortwo Cabrio will be available with two three-cylinder turbo petrol engines; a 1.0-litre with 70 hp and a 0.9-litre unit packing 89 hp, and two transmission options; a five-speed manual and dual-clutch automatic.

Customers may choose from four equipment lines; Pure, Passion, Prime and Proxy, and a wide range of safety and comfort features. Speaking of safety, Smart says the Fortwo Cabrio has a 15 percent stronger body along with ESP, Crosswind Assist, Hill Start Assist, as well as Forward Collision Warning.
