Thunder Power EV Sedan 01

A Taiwanese technology company called Thunder Power takes a stab at the electric vehicle market with the unveiling of a bizarre-looking sedan concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

According to the company, the EV is a result of five years of research and development done together with a handful of European agencies such as Bosch, Dallara and CSI. The car is expected to be launched in Europe in 2017 and in China in 2018, followed by the USA.

A lot can be said about the design but ‘appealing’ is not one. You can thank the renowned Zagato design studio in Milan for the roundish silhouette, boomerang-shaped lights and the unmissable oval chrome grille.

Residing beneath the body panels is a modular architecture, which the company claims will allow the range to be extended to SUV and crossover models. The flexible structure also helps the sedan to keep its weight below the 2,000 kg mark.

In terms of power, the Thunder Power EV is available with a choice of 230 kW (308 hp) or 320 kW (429 hp), with an impressive range of over 650 km on a full charge or over 300 km on a 30-minute charge thanks to a 125 kWh microprocessor-controlled battery pack. The company claims that the 320 kW variant will accelerate to 100 km/h in under 5 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h.
