Volkswagen has pulled the covers off the new Golf GTI Clubsport, a special edition model cooked up to celebrate the hatchback’s 40th anniversary.

Evidently, the GTI Clubsport sets itself apart from the regular GTI with bespoke aerokit consisting of new front and rear bumpers, side sills, diffuser, roof-mounted spoiler and 18-inch alloy wheels, which can be upgraded to 19-inch Brescia wheels.

For an even sportier vibe, the interior is upgraded with tartan fabric and Alcantara upholstery, folding racing bucket seats, golf ball shifter knob and a modicum of red-coloured trims and special emblems.

Though the suspension and vehicle weight remained untouched, the GTI Clubsport is blessed with 261 hp (34 hp more than the standard GTI with Performance Pack) from the reworked 2.0-litre turbo engine. That’s not all. An overboost function will kick in at full throttle to bring the total output to 287 hp for about 10 seconds.

The GTI Clubsport comes standard with a six-speed manual, which helps the hot hatch to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in six seconds. With the optional DSG, 0 to 100 km/h is done in 5.9 seconds.
