2016 Lotus Elise Sport 02

Lotus has officially unveiled the new Elise Sport and Elise Sport 220, with both set to replace the ageing Elise 1.6 and Elise S.

With lighter bodyweight and even more performance-focused attributes, Hethel’s latest additions mark a return of the ‘Sport’ designation that last appeared on the iconic Esprit.

First up, both Elise Sport and Elise Sport 220 are endowed with weight reduction of 10 kg, weighing in at 866 kg and 914 kg, respectively. Powertrains, however, remain unchanged – 134-hp 1.6-litre four-cylinder for the Elise Sport and a supercharged 1.8-litre with 217 hp for the Elise Sport 220. Both benefit from a six-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel-drive.

While performance remains the same, the significant weight reduction results in better fuel consumption of 24 km per litre for the Elise Sport and 20.3 km per litre for the Sport 220.

Both cars operate in Sport mode, which comes with increased throttle response, altered traction control and no understeering recognition for a more engaging drive. Bilstein sport dampers ensure heightened feedback.

Elsewhere, both cars get lightweight sports seats in leather and Alcantara with the option of classic tartan trim, 16-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels in silver or black (optional forged wheels shave a further 5 kg off the weight), matte black rear diffuser and a choice of 10 exterior colours.

Not only that, at £29,900 for the Elise Sport and £36,500 for the Elise Sport 220, the cars are also cheaper than the models they are replacing. The cars will go on sale in Europe next month and will be followed by the rest of the world next year.
