Rinspeed Etos 01

Remember the Rinspeed Etos autonomous concept teased a couple of months ago? We now have the real thing and it’s nothing short of stunning.

Set to debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the Etos is built based on the BMW i8 but with a completely different styling and a landing pad for its own drone at the back. The eye-searing yellow paint and 20-inch Borbet GTX aluminium wheels set the self-driving car further apart from the German plug-in hybrid.

Inside, the Etos has its own cabin design with two HD displays – each measuring 21.5 inches – providing access to the car’s infotainment system, which adopts to the occupant’s preferences to reduce manual input. The steering wheel is quite brilliant as it retracts and disappears into the dashboard in a matter of seconds to open up more working space for the driver.

Instead of the conventional exterior mirrors, the Etos employs a total of eight HD cameras on the outside to eliminate blind spots. People and objects surrounding the vehicle are tracked automatically but a warning will be given to the driver if an accident hazard is detected. A “Curb View” function provides offers a direct view of the front wheels to prevent anything untoward in tricky situations such as in tight parking garages.

As interesting as it sounds, it’s the on-board drone that would get the most attention. According to Rinspeed, the drone can provide some very useful services; from taking selfies to pickup up a bouquet of flowers for the missus on the way home. The little flying machine lands on a Gorilla Glass platform that has 12,000 individually controlled LEDs.
