Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept 08

Volkswagen is adamant to turn over a new leaf and shake off the lingering Dieselgate scandal. The German automaker hopes to do just that with the introduction of the new Tiguan GTE Active concept, which is basically a plug-in hybrid off-roader based on the second-generation Tiguan.

Underpinning the company’s new MQB platform, the Tiguan GTE Active is motivated by a turbocharged, direct-injected TSI petrol engine that produces 148 hp and 249 Nm of torque. The engine is supported by two electric motors, which are powered by a 12.4 kWh lithium-ion high-voltage battery that can be charged either externally or via the engine itself.

Placed right inside the six-speed DSG casing, the front electric motor churns out an additional 54 hp while the rear electric motor puts out 114 hp. Combined with the TSI engine, the SUV boasts a total system output of 221 hp, which allows it to sprint from rest to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds before reaching a top speed of 193 km/h. On battery power alone, the vehicle cover up to 30 km, with a top speed of 113 km/h.

Depending on the driving mode, power can be sent to the front, rear or all four wheels. The car starts off in E-mode as default, which decouples the front motor and TSI engine, and can be switched to GTE mode where transmission, accelerator pedal, engine mapping, and steering settings are in sportier tunes and the engine and electric motors work together for maximum power output. A 4Motion Active Control endows the concept with a total of six driving modes – On Road (Comfort or Eco); Offroad (Rocks, Sludge & Sand, or Gravel); Sport; Snow; Charge; and Battery Hold.

In terms of appearance, the Tiguan GTE Active adds a slew of exterior features developed for extreme off-road use. First up, the SUV’s front bumper is treated to an all-terrain element made of durable polymer, matched with skid plates with polymer protectors, and 16-inch wheels wrapped in 245/70 off-road tyres. On the roof, there’s aluminium cross-rails that can serve as a base support for skis or other equipment, and two LED spotlights.

Thanks to the upgrades, ground clearance under the axle increased to 8.9 inches while the maximum ground clearance under the body increased from 7.9 to 9.6 inches. The approach and departure angles grew from 25.6 to 26.1 degrees at the front and from 24.7 to 29.9 degrees at the rear while the maximum ramp angle increased from 20 to 24.7 degrees.

Interior-wise, apart from the Nappa leather upholstery and Dragon Red trims, the Tiguan GTE Active highlights a 9.2-inch Active Info Display that provides access to its next-generation modular infotainment platform (MIB), which includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
