2017 Niro

The all-new Kia Niro Hybrid Utility Vehicle (HUV) has been officially unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show. While the car is not Kia’s first hybrid, it is the company’s first vehicle to deploy a dedicated eco-car platform.

Designed by the automaker’s design centres in Namyang, Korea and Irvine, California, the Niro sports an athletic appearance with its wide and low proportions, as well as long roofline and short overhangs. You can see the trademark tiger-nose front grille, along with a few outdoorsy elements such as rocker cladding, roof rails, and rear skid plate.

The cabin is typical Kia, as demonstrated by the uncluttered centre console where a seven-inch capacitive touch screen with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay compatibility is placed. Special attention has been paid to the car’s NVH as well, with plenty of insulation, optimised suspension bushing and foam used to keep the noise at a minimum. Acoustic windshield, specially designed engine mounts, steering wheel damper, and insulating pad are also fitted for this purpose.

The Niro is driven by a hybrid system made of a 1.6-litre GDI four-cylinder engine and a 43-hp tractive motor, known as the transmission-mounted electric device (TMED). Together, the Atkinson-cycle engine and motor make 146 hp and 264 Nm of torque, which is channeled to the wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Power for the hybrid drivetrain is provided by a 1.56-kWh lithium ion polymer battery cleverly positioned underneath the rear seat. Kia is targeting a combined fuel efficiency rating of 50 mpg or 21 km per litre.

Some of the techs in the Niro are claimed to be on par with that of the German luxury cars. For instance, the Korean hybrid utility vehicle is equipped with Coasting Guide and Predictive Energy Control, which are developed to maximise fuel efficiency as well as optimise battery usage. There’s also Smart Air Intake, which reduces drag by managing the intake of outside air for the HVAC system and Auto Defog system, which prevents condensation by managing the cycling of the AC compressor.

In other areas, the Niro carries on the familiar features including Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist, Advanced Smart Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, and Autonomous Emergency Braking.
