Honda NSX GT3 01

When you though the new NSX couldn’t look any better, Honda (or Acura, if you’re in America) takes the stage at the New York Auto Show to reveal this: the NSX GT3.

There is a kicker, though. The NSX GT3 is a race car, which means you’ll never see it on the road anywhere. The car is currently undergoing testing in California, ahead of its homologation as an FIA GT3 class race car this September.¬†You can see it in action starting next year, where it will initially compete in a North American series.

The NSX GT3 is based closely on the production version, except it loses the hybrid all-wheel-drive system, leaving the 3.5-litre V6 engine alone with the two turbochargers. The mill is paired with a six-speed sequential racing gearbox that is tasked to deliver the power to the rear wheels.

Elsewhere, the NSX GT3 is enhanced with a custom bodywork, along with aero components such as a large deck wing spoiler, underbody diffuser and enlarged hood vents for better engine cooling. Underneath all that is the NSX’s aluminium space frame, the same one that will come out of Honda’s Ohio facility.

While it will not compete in the GTE category alongside the likes of the Ferrari 488 GTE and Ford GT, the NSX GT3 is expected to make its presence felt in various series across the world, including the Pirelli World Challenge, where the automaker is currently fielding a pair of TLX GT cars.
