MINI Malaysia has officially launched the new MINI Clubman. The wagon which made its global debut at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show is offered here in the usual Cooper and Cooper S trims.
The second-generation model (codenamed F54) is the brand’s largest ever model, measuring 4,253 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width and 1,441 mm in height. The wheelbase is rated at 2,670 mm (103 mm longer than that of the Mini 5-Door), while the track width is 1,564 mm at the front and 1,565 mm at the rear.
The new Clubman is the first MINI to employ BMW’s widely-used Air Curtains and Air Breathers technology on the front bumper. It also ditches the previous suicide door for a more conventional side door and retains the rear barn doors. The rear lights are now horizontal.
As for equipment, both the Cooper and Cooper S variants are kitted with LED headligts and LED fog lights. The car also comes with a puddle light that projects the Mini logo on the driver’s side. As for wheel options, the Cooper variant gets 17-inch net spoke silver alloy wheels while the Cooper S rolls on 18-inch star spoke alloy wheels. Both are equipped with run-flat tyres.
The interior is newly designed, as well. There is the brand’s trademark circular central instrument binnacle, along with a 6.5-inch display. In terms of upholstery, the Cooper variant is embellished with Firework Carbon Black fabric and Hazy Grey surfacing while the Cooper S offers Cross Punch leather in Pure Burgundy, combined with Piano Black surfacing and John Copper Works leather steering wheel with paddle shifters.
Now that the dimensions have been extended, the five-seater wagon boasts 360 litres of space in the luggage compartment. Fold the 40:20:40 split rear seat and you’ll have a total space of 1,250 litres. The car also has plenty of storage compartments including a glove box, as well as pockets in the doors.
On the infotainment front, there’s MINI Connected, which offers access to many apps such as Spotify, where you can enjoy over 20 million songs, as well as GoPro that lets you control the GoPro cameras directly from the car’s cockpit.
The Cooper variant of the Clubman is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo engine packing 136 hp and 220 Nm of torque. The Cooper S, on the other hand, gets to play with 192 hp and 280 Nm (extra 20 Nm with an overboost function) thanks to its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo mill. The former is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission while the latter gets an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox with a coasting function.
Performance-wise, the Cooper Clubman goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds, and hits a top speed of 205 km/h. Fuel consumption is rated at 5.4 litres per 100 km. The Cooper S Clubman completes the century sprint in 7.1 seconds, goes all the way to 228 km/h, and returns a fuel consumption of 5.9 litres per 100 km.
The new MINI Clubman is available in two new colours – Melting Silver and Pure Burgundy. It can also be specified in Pepper White, Midnight Black, Moonwalk Grey, Deep Blue, British Racing Green, as well as Thunder Grey, which is exclusive for the Cooper S variant.
The Cooper Clubman is priced at RM203,888 while the Cooper S Clubman can be yours for RM253,888 – both on-the-road prices without insurance. The price includes a four-year unlimited mileage warranty with free scheduled service.
