2003 Honda City

Honda Malaysia has officially confirmed that the Takata single stage (SDI) driver’s airbag inflators ruptured in two crashes that took place in April and May this year. Both crashes resulted in the tragic deaths of the drivers.

In the first accident that happened on April 16 in Sabah, an inspection with the Royal Malaysia Police confirmed that the driver’s airbag inflator ruptured in a 2006 Honda City. The car involved was included in a recall to replace the affected inflator that was announced by Honda Malaysia on May 21, 2015.

The second crash that took place on May 1 in Kedah also saw the driver’s airbag inflator ruptured in a 2003 Honda City. Similarly, the car involved in the accident was included in a recall that was announced on December 8, 2014.

In a statement, the automaker says they are communicating with representatives of the drivers’ families in an effort to resolve their remaining concerns.

Owners of Honda vehicles affected by the Takata airbag inflator recall are urged to get their vehicles repaired at authorised dealers as soon as possible. Customers can check their vehicles’ recall status at www.honda.com.my or by calling Honda’s toll free number at 1-800-88-2020.
