Welcome to the new Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S – the fastest Golf GTI ever built. Unlike its regular three-lettered counterpart, this car won’t be for everyone with the production run limited to just 400 units worldwide.

In terms of numbers, the new car picks up where the Golf GTI Clubsport left off. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine derived from the Golf GTI TCR race car now packs 306 hp and 380 Nm of torque between 1,700 and 5,300 rpm, sending the hot hatch from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds, and to a top speed of 260 km/h.

Apart from cranking up the power, VW has also taken off the rear seats and some other stuff like insulation, resulting in an impressive unladen weight (including the driver and luggage) of 1,360 kg. True to its lightweight ethos, the Clubsport S is only available in a two-door body style and with a manual transmission.

Tasked with ride and handling duties is the Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) system, which offers Comfort, Normal, Race and Individual modes. The car also has plenty of aluminium components such as aluminium brake covers, aluminium subframe for the front suspension, and 19-inch “Pretoria” aluminium-alloy wheels.

And it doesn’t take long for the Clubsport S to strut its stuff. The hot hatch has already smashed the Honda Civic Type R‘s record for front-wheel-drive production cars on the Nürburgring, with a time of 7 minutes and 49.21 seconds. The feat was achieved with help from a track-specific setting for the DCC system and Michelin Sport Cup 2 tyres.
