Mazda’s new range of diesel engines has now arrived in Malaysia, powering the SkyActiv-D variants of the CX-5 and Mazda6.

The 2.2L engine fitted in the locally assembled CX-5 and fully imported Mazda6 produces 173hp at 4,500rpm and 420Nm of torque at 2,000rpm paired with the six-speed SkyActive Drive automatic gearbox with manual shift mode.

Mazda claims the engine produces torque equal to a 4.0L V8, yet boasts fuel economy that has been improved by 20%.

Besides these two models, Mazda will also be bringing in two units of the CX-3 SkyActiv-D for evaluation purposes, powered by the 1.5L SkyActiv-D engine.

Diesel engines have always faced the challenge of insufficient heat during a cold start and misfiring during warm up, which led to the conventional solution of increasing compression ratio.

However, this would result in the temperature and pressure being too high, causing incomplete combustion, to which the solution has been to delay ignition, but this hampers fuel economy.

Mazda said it has managed to develop a solution to these problems by precisely controlling the fuel injection and improving the exhaust valve’s opening and closing mechanism, with multi-hole piezo injectors used for variable injection patterns.

The precision in the amount and timing enables optimum mixture control, enabling Mazda to achieve a compression ratio of 14:1 in the SkyActiv-D engines, which in combination with the lowered pressure has made it possible to significantly reduce the weight of the engine.

A variable valve lift (VVL) system is used for the exhaust valves – a single combustion cycle is sufficient for temperature to rise; exhaust gas is channelled back into the cylinders, to raise temperature further, improving cold start.

The new generation diesel engine comes with a two-stage turbocharger for smooth and linear response from low to high engine speeds, and greatly improved low- and high-end torque,.

It also comes with an aluminium cylinder block, lighter cylinder walls as well as integrated exhaust manifolds.

The weight of the pistons has been reduced by 25%, and there is also dramatic reduction in friction, to the same level of an average petrol unit.

The Mazda CX-5 2.2L and Mazda6 2.2L SkyActiv-D come equipped with i-Activsense safety features including Lane-Departure Warning (Mazda6 only), Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) and Blind Spot (BSM).

The Mazda6 SkyActiv-D is available in the sedan variant, priced at RM202,830 OTR without insurance, available in Soul Red Metallic, Snowflake White Pearl, Meteor Grey and Sonic Silver Metallic, while the CX-5 SkyActiv-D, priced at RM161,529 OTR with insurance, available in Aluminium Metallic, Arctic White, Blue Reflex and Meteor Grey.
