Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has launched the eighth generation of its flagship model, the Passat, available in three variants – Trendline, Comfortline and Highline – priced at RM159,990, RM179,990 and RM198,990 respectively, not including registration and insurance.
The Passat first arrived on Malaysian shores in 2006, and its seventh generation was the first Volkswagen vehicle to be assembled locally at DRB-Hicom’s plant in Pekan in 2011.
The Trendline and Comfortline are both powered by a 1.8L turbocharged TSI engine that generates 180PS, while the Highline is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged TSI engine that generates 220PS and 350Nm of torque between 1,500 to 4,400rpm, both engines mated to a six-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG).
The Passat now features a start/stop function, regenerative braking and aerodynamic design, while safety-wise it is equipped with Lane Assist, Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Electronic Differential Lock (XDS), as well as six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Brake Assist (BA), Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS), anti-pinch power windows, Isofix and hill-hold control.
Inside the cabin, there are features such as a KESSY keyless entry and push start, leather multi-function steering wheel with paddle shifters, auto-dimming rear view mirror, cruise control, auto power windows, three-zone temperature control and Park Assist.
It is finished with “Brilliant Pine” wood decorative inserts, furnished with ‘Vienna’ partial leather seat upholstery, height adjustable armrest with rear air-conditioning vents, 12-way driver electric seat and “Climatronic” air conditioning system with three-zone temperature control for the comfort of all passengers.
As of 1st September 2016, all Volkswagen cars now comes with 5 years manufacturer’s warranty and 5 years roadside assistance.
On top of that, the all-new Passat also comes with an “early bird” promotion – those who register by the end of the year will also receive five years free service.
It is available in seven colours – Pure White, Deep Black, Reflex Silver, Indium Grey, Crimson Red, Black Oak Brown and Harvard Blue.
VPCM managing director Florian Steiner said the company targets sales of 100 units per month for the Passat, and is confident it can reach a new customer segment through the model.
He expects a bulk of the sales volume to consist of the Comfortline, at between 40-50%, as well as a significant part taken up by the Highline, which garnered much interest at its soft launch over the weekend.
