Maintenance works in the Genting Sempah Tunnel will be deferred temporarily from January 20 to February 13 in conjunction with upcoming Chinese New Year and Thaipusam festive seasons, said concessionaire ANIH Bhd in a statement.

This is in line with instructions from the Works Ministry (KKR) prohibiting maintenance works during festive seasons.

Works Minister Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Yusof said this is to give the opportunity for road users to return to their hometowns for the holidays as well as help reduce congestion on the highways.

“KKR and ANIH Bhd agree maintenance works in the Genting Sempah Tunnel should be carried out according to the fixed schedule, and at the same time take into account the interests of road users.

“Therefore, with this schedule it is hoped users are more alert and can plan their journeys, especially during festive seasons,” he said.

Transport Minister Dato’ Seri Liow Tiong Lai is confident in the steps carried out by ANIH Bhd in traffic management which is able to help reduce the problem of congestion during maintenance works.

“I believe ANIH Bhd has taken all necessary steps in ensuring safety during the maintenance works, as well as anticipating traffic conditions during the festive seasons,” he said.

Meanwhile, ANIH Bhd director Dato’ Nik Fauzi Tan Sri Nik Hussein said from January 10, the contra flow would be activated from Mondays to Fridays, from 8am to 5pm, for two months except during the deferment period.
