Perodua has managed to achieve a 2.4% increase of sales in the first half of the year, with 99,700 vehicles sold compared to 97,400 units in the same period of last year, its best-seller being the Axia.

It estimates total industry volume (TIV) from January to June this year would reach 284,200 vehicles, which would make its market share around 35.1% this year, a slight decrease from last year’s 35.3%.

The company’s president and chief executive officer Datuk Dr Aminar Rashid Salleh said during the six months of the year, all Perodua models were top in their segments with the Axia selling 32,600 units, followed by the Bezza at 28,300 units, Myvi with 24,000 units and Alza selling 14,700 units.

In the first half of the year, TIV has improved by 2.3%, going up to 284,200 from 275,500 in the corresponding period of last year.

Aminar said the increase in sales for the first half of 2017 was due to aggressive sales campaigns initiated by most automotive players as well as new models introduced in the market during that time period.

In addition, most auto players were also clearing the carry over stocks from last year with attractive discounts and over trade.

However, he said despite the improvement in sales, Perodua foresees a tighter lending guideline is still its greatest challenge to overcome, as most of its customers are first time buyers.

Aminar is cautiously optimistic of achieving Perodua’s initial sales target of 202,000 this year; last year the company sold 207,100 vehicles.

On aftersales, Perodua saw 1.02 million vehicles coming into its service centre for the first half of 2017, a 1.2% increase from 1.01 million intakes for the same period of last year.

The Bezza has also been well received in Sri Lanka and Mauritius, with the model selling 79 units and eight units respectively.

Perodua has shipped 1,854 vehicles to six countries in the first half of the year.

It produced 96,600 vehicles in the first six months of 2017, and aims to produce 197,000 by year end.

Meanwhile, Perodua is initiating a special campaign for the Myvi, which is celebrating its 12th anniversary this year, with cash givebacks of up to RM7,500 as well as cash prizes of up to RM12,000 in a special contest in conjunction with the celebration.
