The all-new fourth generation Kia Rio, which was launched in Kuala Lumpur last month, has been introduced in East Malaysia, starting with Kuching, Sarawak.

The new Rio features a restyled sleek and aerodynamic design, as well as improved spaciousness.

Naza Kia Malaysia Sdn Bhd head of company Nazman S. H. C. Yusof said demand for Kia models in the East Malaysian market has grown year-on-year, leading to the company deciding to make Kuching a springboard for other models to further strengthen Kia’s position there.

“The acceptance of the Kia models in East Malaysia has been accelerating since we made our presence here in Kuching more than 15 years ago.

“We are happy to see a positive market response and hope that this will increase our presence in Kuching,” he said.

The new design of the Rio begins from the front with the redesigned lower bumper and sleek integration of the headlamps, along with the trademark ‘Schreyer’ tiger-nose grille.

The rear end features the unique Rio taillights, while the tailgate handle also doubles as the housing for the rear-view camera.

Other features include keyless entry, push start button, powered windows, and automatic headlights with static bending lights as well as LED daytime running lights.

It is powered by a 1.4 MPI DOHC engine with D-CVVT which generates 99hp and 133Nm peak torque, mated to a four-speed gearbox.

Safety features include six airbags, ISOFIX, speed sensing automatic door lock, impact sensing automatic door unlock, rear sensor, ABS, ESC and HAC.

It comes in four colours – Clear White, Signal Red, Smoke Blue and Silky Silver.

Meanwhile, also making an appearance at the launch were Kia’s SUVs, the new Sorento HS Turbo Diesel and Sportage GT Turbo Diesel, which were first introduced to the local market in April.

Both models are powered by the 2.2 CRDi (Common Rail Direct Injection) and 2.0 AWD GT CRDi engines that deliver 440Nm and 400Nm of torque accordingly and boast improved fuel efficiency which can result in traveling close to 1,000km on a full tank.

“We are aware that East Malaysia is a growing market with strong potential; given its wide and rugged terrain, this is a good opportunity for Kia’s SUVs to be in the East Malaysia market as the SUVs not only handle these types of roads well, but make the journey comfortable and safe.

“Additionally, diesel is  fuel-efficient and gives value-for-money to consumers so this is where the New Sorento HS Turbo Diesel and the New Sportage GT Turbo Diesel fit the bill perfectly,” said Nazman.

The Sorento HS Turbo Diesel comes in Clear White, Aurora Black Pearl and Silky Silver while the Sportage GT Turbo Diesel is available in Mercury Blue, Fiery Red, Snow White Pearl and Mineral Silver.

Both models come with five-year unlimited mileage warranty.

In conjunction with the 60th Merdeka celebrations around the corner, Naza Kia Malaysia is having a Merdeka Sale for the Sportage GT and Cerato 1.6 SX models.

Every purchase of either the Sportage GT, at RM126,388 or Cerato 1.6 SX, at RM88,888 during this Merdeka month will come with three years free maintenance service including parts and labour fees, access to Sky Lounge at Subang Skypark and a five-year warranty.
