Before the name Nissan came to being, the company operated under the name Datsun, which had its first car, the DAT, in 1914. It was then renamed to Kwaishinsha Motorcar and again to DAT Motorcar Co. in 1925. The name Nissan was only realised in the 1930s as an abbreviation used on the Tokyo stock market for Nihon Sangyo. After the completion of its Yokohama plant in 1935, Nissan began its international operation by importing 44 Datsuns to Asia, Central and South America. Since the 1950s, Nissan has expanded its operation into worlwide markets beginning with the U.S. in 1960. It has opened many plants outside Japan including the UK, Brazil, China and India since then. In 1957, Tan Chong Motors was appointed as franchise holder for its vehicles in Malaysia.
