Proton is the first Malaysian car manufacturer. It was established in 1983 and is based in Shah Alam, Selangor. It has a 1,280-acre plant in Tanjung Malim, Perak, where the assembly and production of its products are done. It was formerly owned by the Malaysian government’s investment holding arm, Khazanah Nasional before DRB-Hicom took over in a transaction worth RM1.2 billion in 2012. The company had its first vehicle, the Proton Saga in 1985 through a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors. It was based on the second generation Mitsubishi Fiore with a 1.3-litre 4G13 engine. In 2012, the automaker tied up a collaboration with Honda to produce the second generation Perdana, which is based on the eighth generation Accord.
