Like many car manufacturers, Suzuki started out with something not related to cars. Brand founder Michio Suzuki started the business by building automated weaving looms for Japan’s giant silk industry. He then decided to diversify the operation and began developing several compact prototype cars in 1937. The prototypes were powered by Suzuki’s own 800 cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, four-cylinder engine that produced 13 hp, which was respectable at the time. After the World War II, the need for reliable personal transport grew and Suzuki took the opportunity to come up with its first ever motorcycle called the Power Free – an easy-to-maintain two-wheeler powered by a 1-hp 36 cc one- cylinder engine.
